i had a pc that internet explorer would error and need to be restarted all the time.
doing a repair or download the whole version and installing didn't help.
finally did a format and reload and all was well till i downloaded IE6 and the security patches.
encountered explorer errors during the install and still get them occasionally when running another program.
now another pc which i did the security patches on a week ago is erroring out when trying to open internet explorer.
doing a repair didn't help either.
is there a problem with the security patches on WIN98SE??
or is this a problem with IE6??
if so, is there a site to download IE5? or whatever.
i have two more pcs that got the patches and they may be next.
what is the problem and what is the easiest way to fix it???
thankx, ray.
In my opinion, IE6 and Win98 = a mess, just as bad as IE4 and Win95 was.
Add/remove programs, IE6, restore previous configuration. It will put it back to 5.01. This is the most stable IE version for 98 unless you want to try 5.5 SP2 - but that has a known issue printing from IE or Outhouse Express on some machines, it throws a script error at you.
You can get full installs of almost every browser ever made here:

will i be able to get security patches for 5.01 as avail or needed?
also, i could be wrong but i think my win98se full install disc has only ie4. when i tried to install some software, the install said my ie version was to low and at least ie5 was necessary.
will add-remove programs revert ie6 back to 5.0 or all the way back to what was first installed?
anyways, thankx for the download site as i will plan to revert all the pc's under my watch back to 5.01.
security is not a danger with 5.01 as compared to 5.5 sp2 is it?
i like the site...i assume that internet explorer by m$ and 32 bit version of 5.01 is the way to go??
98SE came with 5.0. 98FE came with 4.0. I'd get 5.01 SP2 and use that. Windows Update is gonna keep trying to shovel you 6, but oh well. I'd revert back as far as it goes then put 5.01 SP2 on top of wherever you wind up, as long as it goes back at least that far.
You may run into some sites that won't work with 5.01, but that's the hazards of using an old OS. I personally only have 5.01 on my 2K box here, but I use Opera for my primary browser, and I can set it to lie to sites and tell them it's IE6.
I dunno why, but I see a *lot* of 98 boxes that go unstable when IE6 is installed.
Security? Show me a version of IE that's NOT a security hole! :D

always some dumb glitch...
i went into sytem information and under the tools tab ran repair ie and selected restore to the previous config.
it removed ie6. the page won't even load now.
i had downloaded from another pc and copied to the damaged pc thru the network ie501sp2 [about 70mb] and ran the file. [there was a choice for ie501sp2 nt which i avoided]
it flashed a dos screen for a split second and then quit.
do i need to run this exe program from a dos prompt?
and if so, what are the command lines i need to type??
thankx,ray.

apparently the old version was 5.5 sp1.
i ran goback to just before the updates and it scrubbed ie6 off the hdd.
too bad the ie5.5 still has errors and needs to restart all the time.
i noticed an explorer error error once also.
maybe its time to reload the recovery disc and be very picky about the updates i let m$ install???
[running a repair on ie5.5 didn't help either.]
That 70mb file you downloaded is a self-extracting archive. if you look in the folder where it was when you executed it, you will see a subfolder, this has the install files, you run ie5setup.exe.
Try doing another add/remove, it should now revert 5.5 back to 5.0 unless the 5.0 files are destroyed.

no wonder i got the dos flash screen. never thought to look again in the folder. if i open the folder, it still just flashes the screen. there is nothing named similar to it in my documents on my d drive where i downloaded it. i tried looking for it on my c drive under find files. i did find a lgc and lgd file though.
on the lighter side, out of desperation of trying to avoid a recovery disc and reload of our business software, i ran goback as far back as it could reach and now the darn thing is working ok!
go figure.
still it's good to have the ie5 option as an alternative to ie6.
thankx for the help and i'll let you know if the bug pops back up, ray.

i think i may have found a problem with the ie501sp2 that i downloaded.
for being a 70 mb download, how come the file is only 33 mb??
think i'll try that download again!

stupid download WAS incomplete.
ran the new download and it took about 1 min for all the files to be extracted and inflated as i watched.
ran the setup file and it installed fine.:D
stupid stupid download errors!
thankx again, glc.
just FYI, u can get old versions of most software (which usually use less resources and essentially do the same job) from oldversion.com
