I run Windows 98. Every time I start my system like 18 things start up in the background. Usually before I go on line I hit ctrl/alt/del to shut stuff down. How do I keep these programs from starting up at start up.

Go to Run/msconfig. The startup tab will show you all the programs that start when your computer starts. If you aren't sure which ones to uncheck, go to this web site to find out if you need them.

But you'll find plenty that you wont need at startup. Uncheck the obvious and reboot. You can always go back and recheck if it causes a problem or decide you want it started.
If you get an error before windows finishes loading, restart in safe mode and recheck the offender (tap F8 before splash screen)
