I've done it using the software for my scanner - Paperport.

Just curious - *why* would you want to do that?

here's how i do it. its a two step process

i have adobe acrobat as well. if you don't have that, this won't work

create a .pdf file from word. open it in acrobat, and there is an option to save as a jpeg or tiff, or whatever you want
