I agree 100% with Doobie. DAP is loaded with spyware. I tried it out awhile ago, and wow. Spybot and Adaware went crazy.
You may also want to add iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/) to the list as well. Not only can it be used to play Audio files, but can also rip, burn, and encode. As well as access the CDDB, so you don't have to manually type in all the info when you rip one of your CD's.
reboot

Not everyone has a dvd burner, and for those of us still doing (S)VCD's, you need different software. Gordian doesn't have everything...

Heads-up. Mirc: EVIL! use scoop script instead, or better yet Trillian's IRC is even better. Mirc and even scoop(which is less so)are prone to attract viruses and slammers. besides which they're just a little...you know...wrong way-rubbing. I get an off feeling when I use 'em.

You can't update the CD, but you can download a newer version of the ISO image and burn it.

Found this in the FAQ:
Question: I have F-Prot (DOS) always with latest definitions on my PC. Now do I create an image of this, to be included on my UBCD?
The easiest way is use a program like WinImage to view the F-Prot image file (fprot.img) on UBCD. You will see a file called files.zip within the image. Copy it to your harddisk, then use WinZip to view the zip file. You will see it contains the entire F-Prot distribution. Replace the virus definition files with your latest. Then, copy the updated files.zip to the F-Prot image file.
You still need to use another CD though, or use a CD-RW as cat suggested.

This is a freeware Post It Note utility. Instead of hanging them all around your computer, you can have it on your computer's desktop!
Many people don't have any of the Microsoft Office suites and this can be a big problem when trying to open Excel and Powerpoint files that are either online or that are e-mailed to you by a lucky friend that has these programs. Microsoft offer excellent free Excel and Powerpoint readers that open files from all versions of these programs. I have found to be invaluable:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/excel2000/Xlviewer/2000/WIN98/EN-US/xlViewer.exe
http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/1/a/a1adc39b-9827-4c7a-890b-91396aed2b86/ppviewer.exe
Here's a question though. I have recently switched from IE6 to Mozilla Firefox and I like it a lot. Is it worth changing Outlook 6 as well (which I don't particularly have a problem with) or is it better to just leave a good thing the way it is?
Thanks a lot. Great thread by the way!

DiskWizard- installs hard drives, diagnostics, formatting, partitioning,
and rapid cloning of hard drives, etc. You must clone your C:drive and put it in a drawer, not on the machine. Download DW or use online. Its 'for Seagate drives'
but it has worked with all I've tried it with.

i have been thinking about linux more and more lately. sick and tired of pop ups and all the other problems with windows.....
i'm just worried about being compatible with windows users with programs like Word, AIM and such..... also my HP printer
any comments? any other things i should worry about?
If you use the WINE program you should be able to run most programs. Also, Linux have surprisingly good free software such as word processors and instant messangers, as you've mentioned.

Unfreez (http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/). It's a great .GIF animator, just make some still .GIFs (with another program), and drag and drop them into the unfreez window, and it turns all of your images into an animated .gif. I'm making my avatar for this and other forums with it (im not done, though), its real easy.

This application is a musthave, it is called Trayit! and allows you to move an application to the tray by right clicking the "X" button. It allows me to keep Thunderbird open 24/7 without having it use up precious Taskbar space http://www.teamcti.com/trayit/trayit.htm
Also I reccomend WordWeb. Highlight any word in any application and click on the tray icon to see what it means and similar words. In applications where you can edit text you can replace the word with the correct spelling if you found it was spelled wrong. A must have!

Hostess (http://accs-net.com/hostess/) is a little program to manage your host file. You can import multiple host files into its database and its going to sort the entries into categories and remove duplicate entries, then when you want you can export it to your real hostfile. Its great when you use host files from different places to block out bad stuff.

System Information/Diagnostics
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer In response to direct customer need for a streamlined method of identifying common security misconfigurations, Microsoft has developed the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA). Version 2.0 of MBSA includes a graphical and command line interface that can perform local or remote scans of Windows systems. MBSA runs on Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, and Windows XP systems and will scan for common security misconfigurations in the following products: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0, and 6.0, SQL Server 7.0 and 2000, Internet Explorer (IE) 5.01 and later, and Office 2000, 2002 and 2003. MBSA also scans for missing security updates, update rollups and service packs published to Microsoft Update.

I have found a new tool that helps people quickly review many websites. In addition it helps prevent you from going to sites with spyware, adware, viruses, or even just poor content. The tool is the ReviewToolbar which allows users to rate sites, so that legitimate sites with good content are easily distinguishable from malicious or poorly designed sites. The program embeds site ratings directly in the search results of the web's most popular search engines. The best thing is that like all good tools, it is free. It is available for free at http://www.reviewtoolbar.com

I didn't notice if this was on there or not, but I love WavePad for editing audio files and you can also convert from one type of file to another (i.e. mp3 to wav).
Also, there is a program called OpD2d that lets you record directly from your soundcard. You can record streaming audio in this way. It's not CD quality but it's a nice way to save something that you can't get any other way. It has its own file format but I use WavePad to convert it to a .wav file.

We must have an updated list blue-gun.....
Someone prior mentioned Avast Antivirus by Alwil software.
This program is a totally free stand alone program.
No sidebar advertisements
No pop up adds...ever
No spyware
No adware
Virus Definitions are updated every 3 hours not once a day as in Nortn.
And its easy to sign up
Submit your valid e-mail to avast to receive your free product activation code.
Your PA code is good for one year, at which time you must reregister with Avast to
receive your next year, and so on...
I have Avast on 7 computers in my house and it hasn't failed me yet.
My Opinion--- The most useful program on the net.

Winzip and Winrar both have 40(?) day trials.
You can unzip and unrar(?) things with those after the trial period, but not zip or rar(?) anything.
I think...
Wow, lots of (?)'s on that.
That still does not qualify them as "free" software.

I hear this audio player, Xion (http://xion.r2.com.au) is very good and light. I have it myself and the equalizer can improve the sound quality by a lot (in comparison to windows media player). Fully customizable skin, and a neat thing about the skin is... creating your own skin has never been easier. just create the design in Photoshop, save it as a .psd file and use it!
