InCD

Hello,
I have formatted a ReWritable disc using the Tool called InCD, and i use now the CD like a Hard Disk which is a wonderful thing, it is very handy.

I noticed that on the CD a file called '' Non-Allocatable Space'' has been created, (it has 0 bytes).

When i try to delete it i get the message :

''The file Non-Allocatable Space is a system file''. ''If you remove it, your computer or one of your programs may no longer work correctly. Are you sure you want to delete it?''

What is this file for? Is it normal to be there? It has 0 bytes, can i delete it?

Just leave it alone, it's necessary for the UDF file system.

Short for Universal Disk Format, a universal vendor-independent file system for optical media designed for data interchange and portability, allowing an operating system to read, write and modify data stored on optical media that was created by another operating system > In other words this is the information the computer needs to read the data on the disk.

But the file called '' Non-Allocatable Space'' has 0 bytes, that means there is no data stored in it, right? So why is it there for?

By the way can you please tell me whether is possible for Nero to burn a formatted CD (by say InCD) or the CD has to be completely blank to burn?

It must be erased with Nero before it can be burned.

The "non allocatable space" is a system file, that tells you that it's necessary. It's like the partition table on a hard drive.

Hello, thanks for the answers, they are very useful. Can you please elaborate a bit on the following?

Q1. I understand that the file called '' Non-Allocatable Space'' is necessary but isn't it strange that has 0 bytes?

Q2. Also could you please tell me the difference to erasing a CD using Nero and erasing a CD using InCD?

Q2: There is no difference. Erasing the CD from Nero or InCD will remove any data and file systems on it.

With InCD you can format a CD to use it like a hard drive (hard drives are formatted, too, just with NTFS instead of UDF. UDF is for CDs and DVDs, NTFS for hard drives).
If you want to use the CD as a normal blank CD with Nero, you have to remove the file system first. I believe you need to erase with InCD then because InCD will lock the drive once it encounters a UDF formatted disc and you wouldn't be able to erase with Nero.

It has 0 bytes because it's not a file - its a file *system*. In the original UDF days, the file system took up almost 150mb, now it allows the full capacity of the disk to be used.
