Hi, I'm on Windows 98 running a LAN connection, like I have a modem and we use multiple computers(i'm told this could've been a problem but i disconnected it from the router and just had the modem running and that still didn't work. I tried calling AOL but they don't troubleshoot aim because it's free software. So HELP please! I called my network adminsitrator and they "didn't have the settings/proxy" for aim. I don't know what to do because i REALLY need it. any help at all would be fantastic.

Thanks

You *have* to use 5.5 now - earlier versions no longer work.

Aiight, so i go back and get 5.5, type my log info in like screen name and password...press enter, it goes to the first step which is "1.connecting"...then the "AOL Instant Messenger Error" comes up saying "The AIM service can't be reached."

Preferences - Sign on/off - Connection - Auto Configure

Are you running a firewall? If so, disable it and try again.

Hth,

I hate 5.5....I was still running 5.0 until it no longer was compatible for direct connections and stuff with newer versions. Sigh..

5.5 works fine if you get rid of all the spyware that comes with it.

by glc,
"5.5 works fine if you get rid of all the spyware that comes with it"

Is the spyware installed at the initial installation and one good cleanup with Ad Aware and Spybot is all thats needed?

There's more to it than that, Kubie. It's gonna keep trying to install Wild Tangent till you get rid of the installer, which AOL conveniently hides on the hard drive for you.

Was the auto configure successful?

AgentCrash

nah, the auto configure wasn't successful...it says, "AOL Instant Messenger was unable to establish a connection to a server.

You may need to connect through a SOCKS,HTTP, OR HTTPS proxy server."

You mention a network administrator - maybe you need to tell us exactly what kind of network this is. If this is a school or corporate network, speak to the administrator and ask them to open port 5190 or set up a proxy (SOCKS 4, SOCKS 5, HTTP, or HTTPS, the AIM setup needs both a name and a port number) if they are willing. If they aren't, you are out of luck.

Give us some details on your lan and your internet connection, please. Exact hardware models would help.
