A wood case?

Would it be feasible to build a wood case? I am good with wood and like building things. I have an old AT case that I can steal drive brackets and such from. Would there be any grounding problems? Would this work at all?

Should work fine, but just might need a few extra fans, if you want cut out the mobo tray so you can use that as a mount for the board and just put it in the wood case. Ive seen them in breif cases (which i think is pretty cool). Maybe you can do something like this with the HSF, cut a "blow hole" put a grille on it and it will constantly have cool air.

a wood case would be awesome. youll just need more fans because wood holds heat better than steel or aluminum.

i think (external) water cooling would be a better idea if you actually wanted it to look good without all those holes

completeandutterNEWB is right, you would only have 2-3 holes in the back and it would be well cooled.

You might try a search in the Forums, Hi Ho, as there have been a couple of other threads / suggestions on wood cases. Might find something useful! :) (one day I want to make a wood case, also.)

keep a fire extenguisher close though caus if the PSU or something else blows its going up in flames(well, maybe not but it doesnt hurt to be safe)

If I build one I will put a thick finish on it so it is nice and shiny. Another option I have is to simply cover my existing, cheap case (seen on the left in the picture in my signature) with wood and make a front cover out of wood.

I will use something other than lacquer. I don't know what, however. I don't think that would be too much of a concern if I cover my existing case.

my mom is an antuque (speleoging) fanactic so when she learns enough to need her own computer im hoping to get some old wooden chest and build one in that... maybe even in part of a china closet...

It doesn't appear that exotic woodcrafts builds wooden cases, rather they glue a wooden veneer onto metal cases. The only problem with a wooden case is then you need wooden peripherals. You can get them here.

definitely use a light wood thought, hard woods like cherry would hold too much heat, and the continued using of electricity would warp the wood, making the case useless over a few years. some ideas are to use a light wood and sort of insulator against heat, like aluminum and finish the outside with flame resistant coatings. someone also mentioned to me using China Glass, because it throws heat off way faster than wood. instead of holes, u can slot the bottom portion and add some cool fans to the side...my pal built his own case, but not out of wood...

Yeah, I was thinking the same as you dcxgod, surely hardwoods would hold an unbelievable amount of heat, especially when attached to another case, as they could potentially trap and superheat air in pockets. Water-cooling definitely would be the go IMO

i built a wood pc once
well actually it was a old wine-case but that mekes little difference, somehow it got stuck in the "verry nearly finisched, just need to do a few more details" - stage

just to say i am telling you this out of personal experience: make sure you have a stuckter that is designed to handle the way wood expands and shrinks (i'd advise to use both the rear of the case and the plate that holds the mobo.that way you won't have to worry about pci displacement every time i open mine up it creeks a little and i end up reinstalling half of the pci cards.
