I am removing a cpu fan which is driving my wife crazy....I have become deaf as a result of it so i dont mind it anylonger.

I dont want to break the clips holding it in place. I tend to do things like that. Any help you can give? I am running my machine as i type so im not sure of the model. Its a k62 processor.

Thanks,

To remove the clip holding down the heatsink, it's best to have the motherboard out of the case and on a hard flat surface to support the motherboard and so you can have easy access to the parts.

Look at the clip and see if there is a slot or spot where you can stick a small screwdriver blade into...it might have a hinged portion, it might not. What you want to do is put some thick cardboard around the base of the CPU to protect the motherboard in case the screwdriver slips. Then insert the screwdriver blade into the slot or spot and push downward. Once the clip is free from the lug on the socket, push the screwdriver handle towards the heatsink...this makes the bottom part of the clip kick outward to clear the lug. Once that happens, let up on the screwdriver and the clip will be free.

If there isn't a place to put the screwdriver blade, you're going to have to use two screwdrivers. One to push down with and the other to pry the clip outward to it clears the lug.

and i also assume that i will have to remove the heat sink from the fan?.... do they just clip onto the fan.....and what of this conductive goop i keep hearing about? Does this apply in this instance?

Are you just replacing the fan or the whole heatsink/fan unit?

If you're just replacing the fan, isn't it just held onto the heatsink with screws?

If you're replacing the whole unit, you don't have to worry about separating the fan from the heatsink, unless the replacement you're getting is just the heatsink and not the whole heatsink/fan unit. But the heatsinks for the older Socket 5 and Socket 7 motherboards usually come as a complete unit with fan already attached to the heatsink.

The goop is thermal compound and you have to clean off the old stuff from the CPU and apply new thermal compound. You can use alcohol and a clean rag for that. Make sure the alcohol doesn't contain lanolin (if you're using rubbing alcohol). When applying a new coat of thermal compound, just use a small amount to lightly coat the CPU heatspreader plate and the bottom of the heatsink. If you use too much, it acts like an insulator and you'll get less thermal transfer from the CPU to the heatsink.
