Volcano 9

Hi all,

I just bought a volcano 9 for my Athlon XP 2600+ and I find out that I can't use the smart fan properly. After I put the sensor & hsf in place and try to turn on the computer, it won't boot. However, when I take away the sensor and run the fan at top speed, the computer worked fine.

My mom is complaining about the noise that my computer fans make, and I really want to us the temp control function of my fan. Does anyone know how I can fix the problem.

ps i think the problem is that the sensor is not actually "touching" the back of the cpu, thus the fan not spin according to the temp of the chip.

My mom also nearly kicked me outta my house when I installed that HSF. I had to put the Cooler-Master back on. :(

I tried the sensor, installed properly, but never worked. Fan continued to run at the same speed.

I did get the coolest temp I've ever gotten in a CPU with it (36ºC on an Athlon 1700+), but at the cost of the noise.

Yeah it is pretty loud, but it's not the loudest fan I had. My previous is a "no name brand" and is about twice as loud. That's the reason why I bought the Volcano... Now that It's not working out properly, I may have to consider buying a new fan.

Is cooler master good?

Why don't you just replace the fan instead of the whole unit? If you want a quiet fan, get a Vantec Stealth or Panaflo L1A. If you want to be able to control the speed of the fan, get whatever fan you want and install a fan controller.

Cooler Master heatsinks are okay but it depends on which one you're thinking of. Their aluminum ones are basically the same as the stock AMD coolers. Their copper ones are okay, but not as good as the Thermalrights.

for a fan that shoots out 76 cfm ya gotta expect some noise. In a decent case thought ya can barely hear it when its turned down. did ya follow installation procedures correctly? http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/volcano/rs/a1365.htm

Cooler-Masters are very good, but as Prop says, you will still have noise. Try what Cricket suggests and see if it helps any.

Also, you may consider the Zallman flower HSFs, I have heard they are pretty good, altho I dunno about their noise ratio.

Good way to get rid of noise with the fans that push a lot of air is to ditch the fan grille, i found that with the Tt smart fans or any high rpm fan for that matter the noise in much louder (almost doubled) with the fan grille on, and you will get different pitches with different grilles, I've found grilles that have a biohazard sign (similar to the look of nuclear's one, above the paladin) makes the most annoying noise out of all the ones I have tried.

i need some help on my comp! my computer always overheats when im doin stuff and the noise the alarm makes really annoys me! im gonna buy a new heatsink i think! any suggestions into what one?

im in england so im thinking of spending about £10 - £15 on one!

If I want to use a different fan on my thermaltake heatsink I must get a fan with the same size as the original, right?

Say my first (noicy) fan is 80mm*80 mm, do i have to buy one with the same size?

Yes, the new fan must be the same size *unless* you get an adapter.

One question on installing the Volcano 9, when I fix the sensor at the back of the cpu, do I have to make sure that its touching the cpu? Do I have to use tape or something to tape it to the back or would that demage anything?

it should have a double sided sticky tape included with it. you peel off one side, stick it to the underside then remove the other tape part, then stick the sensor to it . do not apply to much pressure when doing so. then you feed the 2 thin wires thrue the pins and insert it into the socket and lock it in place.

But now I have another problem. Right after I turn on the power of my comp the the fan is already spinning at top speed. Does this mean that the temp of my cpu is already reallly hot the moment I turn it on?

is the jumper pin on ? (blue thingy) I have it on but Im not using the speed control that came with it. Im using the Hardcano 9 Fan controllers. the fan controller that comes with the fan is a POS. maybe its stuck on high speed

ooo, i didnt like the volcano 9. apart from sounding like 10 jets takin off, i found it crap.
go for a coolermaster cp5 silent. top notch cooling and EXTREMELY quiet. i know every one has their own opinion, but this one works great. ive fitted them on my last 5 builds.

yes, and hes havin problems with noise and such like. exactly what i had when i bought a volcano 9. so im tellin him what i did. is that ok like.
tuekr, have you downloaded the installation info direct from thermaltake?? it is more informative than the one u get with the fan . try that mate.

I have a Volcano9 HSF. It came with a speed controller, I thought they all did.

they all come with the speed controller. you have 3 options with it.
1: have it on full speed all the time.
2: have it in thermo controlled via the temp sensor which you stick on the processor.( which i found dodgy)
3. use the manual variable control.
you also have to power it via the adaptor to take power direct ftom the power supply. NOT the 2 pin fan header on the board.

I 've download the stuff directly from thermaltake. Well when I first install it I found the manual that comes with the Volcano a bit hard to understand.

I think I've got all the stuff installed correctly now. It's just that the fan is way too loud. I think the sensor is already working but my cpu temp is about 55 C so it spins at top speed all the time.

i found the volcano , not that clever in the cooling stakes. on the lowest speed its fine . but my cooling was 60 /65 ish.
top speed was 55ish. but massively noisey. dont use the sensor . but use the speed control and see what the temp is on low setting.
the cooler the better, but anything between 40/60 is deemed normal. dont forget , where you position your pc can afect it too. take off yous side panels and see how hot it runs with them off.

propain seemed to have a pop at me for saying that the coolermaster was better, but i bought the volcano expecting good things. now it looks like your having the same problems as me . i found there to be no answer to the noise or the insufficient cooling, so i tried a coolermaster cp5 for 5 pounds from ebuyer. and the difference was amazing.
so if any of the mods think what im saying isnt relevant to this thread , then please correct me.

My cpu temp is 28 C with a Volcano 9 hsf, 3 C higher with load. I just can't see how anyone has issues with these coolers. Sorry, but mine works great.

sorry Duhamel, I don't have a digital camera... but I am pretty sure my hsf is installed properly.

my cpu temp is between 34-42 at different workload, that is quite a bit hotter than yours.

By the way, which athlon cpu do you use?
