A friend just called me with a problem he’s having with his computer. (P4 2.4, W2K). He said it was running extremely slow this morning, so he updated Adaware and scanned his system. He then rebooted and that’s where the problem began. Now everything is upside down!! Tool bar, icons, everything! Anybody ever heard of such a thing? Virus, Trojan, ???

Hi Ron,
This may be a far-out guess, but how did he reboot it? If he used Ctrl-Alt-Del, he may have changed something on his video card setup. Some video cards have drivers that can turn the screen upside-down and he may have hit the hotkey designation for that (such as Ctrl-Alt-Down or something similar). I'd check the desktop display properties of the video card first just to make sure there isn't something turned on relating to that.

catalyst 4.3 lets you turn your screen upside down. Whats his video card?

I think he has a Radeon 7500 with the original drivers.

Correction: he has an Intel 845G board with onboard video.

Wow, this one really has me stumped. Tried "Last known good config", etc.

Are there some videocard setup options, i.e. in terms of adjusting screen orientation etc.?

There are virii that will flip the screen around, so lets not rule it out. Of course while some of them are pretty old. they occasionally come up as part of jokes sent to people. <A HREF="http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=JOKE_FLIPPED" TARGET="virus">JOKE_FLIPPED</A> and <A HREF="http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=FLIP.1" TARGET="virus">FLIP.1</A> are just some of them. I'd suggest a good online scanner.

Ron, I've seen that with the 845G. Your friend hit the hotkey combo to rotate the display 180. Turn the monitor upside down so you can see what you are doing, go into display properties, and find the Hotkey and Rotation settings - and disable them. Reboot and it should be back to normal. Juppy is on the right track here.
