My pc will not recognise the new cpu fan i bought. When i turn it on with the new fan installed there is a series of beeps and then either the computer turns itself off or sometimes it displays a message telling me that "the cpu fan is not functioning properly" and stops there. I can see that the fan is turning and the heat sink remains slightly warm to the touch (it feels the same as with the old fan). I have now reinstalled the old fan. Any suggestions?

I have an AMD Athlon XP 1.8 on a VIA mainboard and the new fan is a Cooler Master something.

Does the new fan have 3 wires or just 2? You probably need a 3 wire fan (1 power, 1 ground and 1 for the RPM sensor) so the BIOS can "sense" the fan is there.

Both fans have 3 wires, same colours and everything. But i had no idea what each wire was for! Now, could the problem be that the new fan runs on different rpms? Is there anyway to convince tha BIOS that everything is right?

Try connecting that new fan to another fan header. Go into BIOS and see if the fan's RPMs are showing up or not. If not, the RPM sensor is dead.

Problem solved. I disabled cpu fan detection at POST. Thanks.
