Hi
i just got a old comp donated for my sister. its a peace of s*** but its for her. the cd drive is not working. i thought that there was not a jumper installed i saw that there was, i changed it i thought it might be bad. i got to test it.(cant turn it on now because of fan failor. so i got to wait for the fan to come. there are 3 jumper settings master slave and one more its called cable select do i put a jumper in that?

It depends. If you're using a 80 ribbon cable, jumper it cable select.

If you're using a 40 ribbon cable, jumper it either master or slave, whichever is appropriate. If it's the only drive on that IDE channel, jumper it master. If there is already a master on that channel, jumper it slave.

how do i know if it is a 80 ribbon or 40. it has the jumper thing cable select on it do i put a jumper on it or wat

A 80 ribbon cable has finer wires than the 40 ribbon cable.

Look at the floppy cable. If the IDE cable looks like it (just with more pins of course), then it is a 40 ribbon cable.

If the wires are finer, then it is a 80 ribbon cable. 80 ribbon cable also have mostly color coded connections.

The 80 wire IDE cable also has a finer surface texture on the cable, the 40 wire IDE cable surface texture is more pronounced.

You could test the CD-ROM drive in another computer. If it doesn't work there, it's probably dead.
