"stand by" option grayed out when shutting down win xp home?

hey guys

any idea why the "stand by" option would be grayed-out & unavailable in the shut-down dialog box in win xp home?

this is a new build, and i have no idea why this is the case.

Check your Power Options in Control Panel (classic view) and see if hibernate is enabled or if standby is set to never in all cases. Not positive that is it, but I suspect it's a Power setting.

Its a video driver issue, get the newest drivers and it will not be grayed out anymore.

I have the same problem, but I am using Windows 98SE. And under Power Management, the only thing that has to do with standby is where I choose what happned when I push the power button. I tried it, and it doesn't do anything. The standby option doesn't even show when I do start, and shutdown. I have my latest video card driver. Can someone please help me?

you have to change a setting in BIOS although im not sure which one. if youre using the american megatrends bios, then it is under power management but i have yet to figure it out.

What is the make and model of your motherboard?

Don't even use standby - leave the machine running and just turn off the monitor - or shut it down. Power management is one of the biggest pains to deal with.

I am using the Intel 865 PERL on Windows 98SE. The thing is, it's worse than it sounds. I have already started a thread in General Hardware listing all my power troubles. I'll briefly tell about it here. When I shutdown or restart, it stays at "windows is now shutting down." I then have to manually turn it off by holding in the power button for a couple of seconds. In the bios, there are hardly any power management options, none of which seem to have anything to do with Advanced Power Management. And of course, Stand by doesn't even show up on the shut down menu. I hope to get Windows XP soon.

Are you aware of this bios setting when using 98se or ME on your motherboard?

YES! shutdown and restart works fine now. I did the legacy thing like you said, and I changed the ACPI thing to S3 state. So, one or both of those things fixed it.

And standby shows up now!

but, one problem with standby:
It goes into standby mode, but I can't get it to wake back up from standby. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Do you have settings in your bios for Legacy keyboard or mouse? Might be one of them needs to be changed also.

I looked at the intel support site, and I searched for legecy, keyboard, and mouse. It it only giving me pages that deal with USB legacy, and no PS/2 stuff. hmmm.......

Don't even TRY to use standby with a modern motherboard with Win98.

I got it all working now. I messed around with BIOS and Power Management. Standby works, wake up works, shutdown and restart all work. whats wrong with modern motherboards, Win98 and standby?
