I finally got my wireless setup properly working at home, and i'd like to get some online game installed.
i am in doubt between wolf ET and america's army 2. My pc with the wireless internet is only a duron 800, ecs k7vza mobo, 265mb sdram, gf2mx200 64mb.
For WolfEt these specs are sufficient according to the homepage, but on the pages of AA i found that a 1ghz cpu is a minimum, and 2ghz is advised.

would it be worth to try AA 2 at lowest settings ? or is this pc simply too old.?
If mine is too old, my father's pc is an abit kd7, athlon1800+, 265mb ddr 333, radeon 7000 64mb. would this pc be capable of running AA 2 somwhat properly ?. (esp with the old vidcard? )

thanks

You might be able to play a few maps on AA, but the Special Forces maps will probably be very laggy for you.

Why not try it? It's free and you have nothing to lose. I play AA and even the Far Cry demo on the PC in my signature with no lag on the highest settings.

Thanks, i have the install files for ET and AA2 downloaded now so ill install both and see what happens. Just wanted to inform if this would be a waste of time and bandwidth or not.
I hope AA will run more or less, is saw it on my "new" pc (for practical reasons, only my older pc has a connection) and it looks very nice, too bad it has so limited "singleplayer".

do players with low bandwidth get kicked easily on AA? it happened in ET several times.

I'm not sure. What kind of connection do you have?

Well some people try to vote kick people from servers because off high pings but that is few and far between. Try joining my clan’s official server ip: 69.25.18.20 its running SF hospital. Server name is Born 2 Kill if you don’t know how to join by ip

I have a broadband cable connection (telenet belgium, i dont know exactly what bandwidth i get, it's above 500kbps) , but my pc is on a wireless connection on the cable modem. its a dlink 54mbps g+ Wlan. Sometimes its as fast as my father's pc wich is connected with cat5 cable on the cable modem ("wired" i mean) but speed goes up and down.

You should have no problem. Pretty much anything other than dial up will work well for online gaming except satellite. I have a hard wired network and all the speed is very fast from all the computers on my cable connection even when they are being used simultaneously.

It lost connection several times a day in the beginning when i had the wireless , but i recently changed the channel, and it seems to be solved.

I Guess i ll stick to ET for the duron, i saw AA2 on singleplayer on my father's pc and i'm afraid its way to new for my old pc .

does anyone know of any other games of this type that will work properly on my duron 800 ? (not necesarily fps, but with many pple online) ? The being free part is always a big plus off course :)

thanks

Medal of Honor is a great game that should run on that system. Call of Duty may work too. Age of Empires and Age of Mythology will work if you like those kind of games. The Delta Force games should also work.

Great, i still have the first mohaa lying around somewhere. I totally forgot i have that game. It was indeed very good when it came out.

I like strategy games in general a lot, but are there enough players to be found online for these games ? i guess most online gameplay is to be found in fps and mmorpg. do you know if there is a "large enough" community for online strategy gaming?

MOH:AA is still a great game. I still play it after almost two years. There are tons of people online for AOE and AOM. They are very popular games. AOE, even though it was made in 1999 is still extremely popular and I still play it. Untill Rise of Nations came out, it was called the best strategy game ever made.

the durons are not very good for gaming, you may want to consider upgrading to even an athlon tbred..
you can get one for $43 1.3ghz <a href="http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80235" target="_blank">here</a>

or an athlon xp 1800+ for $52 <a href="http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80156" target="_blank">here</a>

Well this duron is my "old" pc as i posted above. this mobo prolly isnt even capable to anything above 1ghz, and its with sdram.

I built a "new" pc with an abit nf7-s , athlon2200+, gf4ti4200 128mb around easter last year, but due to practical reasons, only the duron has an internet connection. The new pc only gets singleplayer and lan games.

I would be interested in faster cpu to replace the duron cpu, but most sites dont send to europe (i live in belgium, i don't own a credit card) .Over here product choice is a lot smaller (a lot smaller market) . I cant find anything "old" enough anymore to fit on this ecs k7vza.

Hi Ho, is rise of nations so popular online? two of my friends own the game. Next time i'm at the store, im ging to see if they still sell it. I have mohaa and aoe, so i'll try those first.
Its good to do some online gaming again, it has been from the days of Kingpin when i played online.

thanks

Yes RON is popular online but that game is a resource hog. It takes a lot of power to run smoothly. However, since it works decently on my other computer (K6 500MHZ 256MB RAM) then it may work fine on yours. Also, if you have cable internet why not buy a router so you can have both computers hooked up to the internet? It makes no sense to only have one hooked up.

Ron is still being sold here, so im going to get it one of the next days, when i'm in town.

i already have a router between cable modem and wireless access point, my dads desktop pc is directly on the router.
My athlon 2200 doesnt have internet because its too far away to get a tcp/ip cable to there (dad doesnt want me to start drilling holes, i need at least 5 to get to it)
and the wireless only works good to my bedroom on the 2nd floor . My athlon2200 is in the attic, i have it connected to my mixing panel ( i use it more for audio/video and such), and it was the only room with a free cable tv wall connector (for the tvcard) . also , i disturb the other pple less with the noise from the subwoofer when i'm upstairs:)

hahahaha sounds like a nice set-up you've got there grasshopperbe..... Party room in the attic methinks ;)

Yep you've got that right :). the only thing i dont have upstairs in an internet connection, but for the rest i got more or less all i want for equipment by now. ( some bigger main speakers in the future maybe :) .
Thats why i want to keep my newest pc up there, this duron with onboard via sound would not really fit in anymore with the rest . .
I live with my parents and grandparent in the same house , i like it here best because i have lots more room here and no direct neighbors, my parents are away often so i can keep an eye on my grandmother now and then (her legs arent as good as they used to be)

You could try one of those powerline network things. Here is one I think would work:

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=33-190-002&depa=1

Its not as fast as CAT5 but it works.

yes i read about those powerline ethernet things a while ago in a pc magazine, and it seemed quite interesting, im going to look around if these are being sold in local shops already (western europe is always way behind on new hard-and software)
. We are on another voltage that US , so it might be safer to try and find one over here.
the speed is still a bit faster than my cable so that's still perfect.
Is it simply something that one connects to two pc's (or router port) to get a connection? or does it also need more devices to work?

thanks for the link.

Hi Ho

I believe it simply turns the electrical wiring in the walls into an ethernet wire. I think it comes with two modules. You just plug one in by the router and hook it up to one of th ports. The other one goes by the other computer and hooks up to it. It would be a good idea to buy local. :) Who knows what would happen if it was the wrong voltage.

If it works as "simple" as that to connect, it would be great, i could maybe even place it between the wireless on the second floor and my new pc in the attic.
(set it up as an extra security with a proxy or so ).

if its "dependant" from the local voltage i certainly need a local model. we have 220v here, so it would kill a 110v device instantly (with a lot of smoke probably)

I looked the local online stores, but i havent seen any of these offered yet. im going to town by the end of the week anyway so ill go ask around if it is sold here already.

I believe it actually is that simple grasshopperbe, my mate said it is (though he's an electrician). I'd forgotten about them until HiHo mentioned it

I just found a store that sells powerline network adapters, its a "set" made by packard bell i believe. A box with a complete set (2 adapters, some cable and so) will put me back about 160 bucks. I'll have to wait for one of my next paychecks before i'm going to purchase this. And i want to 100% guaranteed sure that it ll work properly. This wireless has cost me almost 200 bucks, and it still doesnt work like it should. (sometimes its ok for a week, but after a number of days, it always starts to give me troubles)
I still havent tried much online gaming on this pc, its really annoying when i lose connection when in game. ET seems to work ok when i have connection though. I have Rise of nations, but havent tried it yet.

Hi Ho

Well I hope it works. If it doesn't you can always take it back. Let us know how it goes.
