View Full Version : IDE Primary & secondary?

The system shown below in the signature is about to come together. There is one remaining question or idea I want to pass among you folks. The only IDE devices I will have are the two DVD’s, one a ROM and the other a burner. I think I will set each up as masters on the two IDE channels. The burner on “primary” and the ROM on “secondary”. This should make direct transfers much better from a performance standpoint. Is there any problem with this approach? I can’t find anything in the documentation that says no. All thoughts appreciated.
That would be the ideal way to do it.

Than ks GLC. That's the way I'll do it! Enough said. In your opinion, are the small form IDE cables any good? They sure ought to allow more air flow versus the ribbons. Could it be worth it?
Thanks again!
I prefer standard flat cables, especially for optical drives. It's pretty easy to route, fold, and bundle them out of the way.

Thanks!! I'll see if I can't make it tidy as well.
Cooling should not be an issue with the system in your sig anyway. The need for a ton of noisy fans just isn't there with the Northwood core P4's like it was for the Socket 423 Willamettes and the pre-XP Athlons. However, if you put a Socket 478 Prescott in there, all bets are off, that sucker is a furnace.

I've heard other people say the same thing. I doubt I'll go to a Prescott any time soon. Right now I just want to dance with the one that I brought, if you know what I mean. FEDEX is suppose to hit me tomorrow with the rest of the stuff I need. Thanks for all your help!!!

I just built a system and did you what you plan to do. DVD burner on Prim IDE, DVD-Rom on Sec IDE, SATA HD (Primary Drive) on SATA1 and older IDE HD on Raid 1. Only problem I had was that I couldn't see the older drive until I realized that I needed to install the raid controller drivers.
Everything works great with that set up.
Good Luck!
GLC,
Wish I had seen this thread yesterday. Just ordered all round cables for my system. If they really do not make a difference I guess I will send them back.
Thanks
They don't make a darn bit of difference except in appearance and when you have a tough cooling situation.
