Files Wrote on CDR don't read work files

I burned some of my moms work files onto a cd big word documents because the computer was getting really slow & had a few viruses. I used the highlight files sent to e: (cdrw) to burn them. Windows goes through the process and i finish it. I take out the cd to reformat the hard drive and i coudl see where it wrote. I reformed and reinstalled windows and i go to get the files off the cd and there is none.:eek: Windows picks the cdr up as a blank cd but i wrote stuff on it. I really need to get these files I'm thinking maybe it didn't finalize. Does anyone know whats up? I really need help bad.

Have you reinstalled the burning software yet? Can you read it in another computer?

I used the burning software though windows xp. I can't read it on another computer.

Do you have Windows XP Service Pack 1 ? If not, install it, it contains fixes for the burning engine.

I had the same problem with XP Original. Never tried it with SP1, though, but it should work.

Yep I have windows xp sp1. When I click on the properties for the cdr the file system says raw date.

Well after my two bad experiences wit XP's burning engine I never used it again so I don't know what is wrong. I don't think it has to do with finalizing as a non-finalised CD can at least be read by a CD-burner. It won't be read by a -ROM drive but a burner can do it.
All I can do is suggest you to use a good burning program like Nero, and a program like IsoBuster to retrieve the files of your XP-burned CD.

I tried iso buster and it read it but i couldn't recover anything. Now i downloaded a program called badcopy pro and it seems to be reading the files so hopefully i can save them.

read error at address 186743
device error reported 05/21/00

on open session says track one 239.06 mb

anyone know how i coudl just delete 186743?

Well the other program found some files but they wanted 40.00 to order the full version which i won't do. How do i try to recover them though isobuster? i downloaded the program but am kinda confused.

Start IsoBuster. On the upper left, select the optical drive that contains the CD with the data to be retrieved. On the left side you can browse through your CD. On the right side you'll see your files and folders. Just right click on the items and select Extract Objects. Then select the destination and click OK. IsoBuster will now recover your files.

On the left browser side in IsoBuster you have different icons.
If Joliet causes problems then just try the ISO part. The difference is that with ISO you have the 8.3 filename instead of long ones.

It should look like the pic I attached. Under Session 1, Track 1, there is the ISO part and the Joliet part (the joliet is the blue one with the three arrows in it). Try the ISO part.

Well i tried the iso part and extracted it and got nothing.
I tried badcopy but it only recovered 4 files which i really didn't need i can just redownload them.

Hindsight is wonderful. ALWAYS test your backup before you wipe a drive. I can only guess that the malware may have corrupted the burning engine. The SAFEST way to back files up to a CD is use a CD-R, and real burning software such as Nero or Roxio to create a properly finalized ISO or Joliet data CD. I just don't trust CD-RW and UDF packet writing enough yet to absolutely depend on it.
