How do I use these programming languages on a computer with the OS Windows XP Pro, and still keep the general use of the computer for the wife and kids. Do I need a certain computer or specific programs? Any help greatly appreciated.

You can definitely use your computer to program and still keep it a family computer. I programmed in a specific C++ program, just like WORD is a specific word processing program. Install the C++ program and put a shortcut on your desktop. Easy as pie. Doesn't change anything and you don't need a massive computer to run it. So go ahead and install and happy programming!

You can also set up an additional user logon for your specific uses. Goto [control panel] -> [user accounts] and add a new one... I have 3 WinXP logons, each with personal desktops and personalized accessibility for work, play and guests.

But like Dragon said, installing a program will usually never interupt the way the rest of the computer functions (well, not the kind you want, anyway).
