What is linksys ?

Hi

I have a PC running wireless connection on XP Home OS. Everything was fine until I moved it this afternoon. The wireless connection seems to be down. Sometimes it works, sometimes, it doesn't. Moreover, when I was surfing the Internet for a while, a message popping up saying something like "One or more wireless connections available" and when I open the panel of that wireless connection, I saw "linksys". What is that and why did it appear though I did not do anything with it ? Thanks

Linksys was the SSID for someone's wireless access point, or a linksys router. Linksys is the default SSID, and if you could have connected to it, the router was configured poorly. Did you move out of your router's signal range?

I didn't even touch it, so why did it appear in the Wireless Connection panel ?

It appeared to tell you theres another access point to connect to if you lost your connection. You should have saw your own, if you didn't disable the SSID Broadcast, or walk out of your router's signal range.

Can you please tell me more about the SSID Broadcast. What is that ? What made "linksys" appear there ? It did by itself ? Thanks.

I'm getting interested in your explanations as they make the problem more understanable to me. I just have another concern:

I saw Home default connection. Is that another default connection as you said "linksys" to be ? What do you mean by "having another access point ?

any wireless network has a "name" to it...as does yours. "linksys" is the default name that linksys routers assign to their networks. this is probably a neighbor's wireless network that you are in range of. if you haven't changed any settings in your router, your neighbor can probably see your wireless network also. you should download the more advanced manual for your router from the d-link website and turn off broadcasting of your ssid, which is the "name" of your network. this will prevent any unwanted connections to your network.

By the way, assuming that I disable my SSID, will that affect my connection speed? The reason I ask is my connection seems to be slower after my SSID was disabled.

No, disabling the SSID broadcast should not affect connection speed...
