I have been thinking about this issue for a while now. I am the kind of person who likes to research brand reliability for anything I buy. If I am buying a toaster or something like that, I can turn to a publication like Consumer Reports, but for computer parts it is a different story. A lot of new builders also have questions about brand quality, and a lot of threads deal with what are good PSUs, boards, and so forth.
I think it may be helpful to have a sticky thread in the hardware section that just gave a short list of what brands are good (and, probably more importantly, which brands are bad) for various components. It wouldn't say anything about which particular component is best for a particular situation, or get into features, it would be short and sweet (for example, for PSUs it could just say "Good: Enermax, Antec,....Avoid: DEER,...) That way, people who have absolutely no clue about parts, or who aren't keeping up with the latest news and information, could see at a glance where they should start looking.
It would probably be best for mods to be the only people who could change the list, and they could change the lists as news and information warranted. We have a large community here (and many members work in related fields and so get even more input on these issues), so I think we have a pretty good grasp of what brands are good and what aren't.
I admit that I can see some problems with doing this, which is maybe why we don't have this already. Has this been discussed before? What do people think?
