Do I need special software to utilize a gigabit lan or will my games run as long as I have gigabit mobo ethernets and a gigabit switch.

Will there be a noticable differance or will a 100 be fine. No matter what the best internet routers are 100 so my internet connection will remain 100

no, you must have everything in gigabyte hardware, any one device will knock it down to 100

all devices, switch, nic's and the gable must be rated for it too.
cat-5e should work fine.

Only the internet access is 100 so as long as it is seperate than the Lan party can go 1000 and my internet will be 100

there will be a 1000 8 port switch connected in a ring (2 connections) to a 4 port firewall router so my Lan party should be able to have 6 players all running 1000 without any problems the other 2 connections on the 4-port are for my multimedia pc and something else. I can always disconect the router if I am just going to play an 8-player game

Your Internet is a LOT slower than 100, I guarantee you. A full T1 is only 1.5 and the best cable systems out there are 6 tops.

as long as it is a gigabit client talking to a gigabit client and the intervening equipment is gigabit you will be running at gigabit.

BTW, having 2 connections to the router from the same switch does you no good. Your switch more than likely has spanning tree protocol active as a default so it has virtually severed 1 of the links to prevent an infinite loop and the resultant broadcast storm that inevitably erupts. DO NOT disable spanning tree.

Actually, a T3 line is 45mbit, nowhere close to gigabits!

there is 10Gb/s runs on fiber and it is traditional ethernet.

OC-192 is 9.6Gb/s telco technology it runs a type of technology called SONET (synchronous optical network)

this is a "how much you got"($$) technology: the lines are extremely expensiv (usually the purview of telco backbone connections), the hardware is expensive (in the range of a couple of million)

Even if you had a 9gig Internet connection, how would you use it? You wouldn't have any hardware locally, or remote sites that could begin to fill the pipe! Gigabit lines are the stuff that the Internet backbone uses for many connections, it would be pointless to have it go to a single machine, or even a group of machines.
