Dsl connection rebooting my pc

I have recently had trouble with my PC ever since i moved and switched from a cable modem to a DSL connection at my new place. As soon as i start trying to download and upload at the same time(file sharing programs) my computer spontaneously reboots. Any input is welcome.

Mabye a virus? Or bad DSL provider's software (if it's PPPoE)?

My service does use the PPPoE.... is there a way to correct this problem with updates or drivers?

Uninstall the software and use the built in PPPoE that is in XP or get a router which will have the benefit of keeping the connection on at all times like cable.

Which ADSL modem do you have, brand, model.

Win XP built in PPPoE client is great if you have a modem that is bridgable. I uninstall a certain providers software and connect via other means several times a week. The CDs they send out are useless to me.

Do you get any errors when your PC comes back up? Also check your Device Manager and see if there are any driver conflicts. In case you are getting an error: Right click My Computer>Properties>Advanced>Start Up and Recovery>Uncheck Automatically Restart.

The 5100 is a simple bridge modem. It works fine with the XP PPPoE client, a router, or RASPPPoE. Any of those 3 are preferable to the junk the ISP sends you (Enternet 300, Winpoet, etc.).

Well i tried the program RASPPPoE and got it working and connected to the internet, then i tried to increase my downloading and uploading..... and bang... restart. I'm totally lost, any suggestions are welcome.

I had to ask, but have you check to see if you have the msblaster virus? it causes reboots.

would that virus be detected by norton or AVG? or do i have to detect it by some other means?

no i ment i just started to use the file sharing programs. Increasing the upload and download traffic through my connection. Which seems to reboot my system.

Uninstall RASPPPoE according to the instructions, then use the New Connection wizard, it should be fairly obvious, you have a broadband connection that requires a username and password.

Generally, RASPPPoE is better than the XP client, if it's doing the same thing as it was with the ISP's software, you have some other issue.

well... i uninstalled an removed all network connections and reinstalled the software provided with my DSL service and it seems to be working now.... go figure, it had to be something as easy as that just to give me some grief for a while. :)

Well, i spoke to soon.... it's not the RAM, it's not the power supply, it's not CPU temps, i've tried RASPPPoE to connect, and to no avail each time i have heavy internet traffic my computer restarts. I could really use some help, i'll try anything.

Well just changed the network adaptor from the onboard LAN to a siemens speed stream 1020 ehternet adaptor. Things were working great and wham. Here is the message i keep recieving.

A problem has been detected and windows shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If 1st time you've seen this message restart. If screen appears again follow these steps.

-Run diagnostic utility supplied by hardware manufaturer. In particular run a memory check, check for faulty or mismatched memory. Try changing video adaptor.

-Disable or remove any newly installed hardware/ software and drivers.

What does it say after all those zeros? That's the clue we need.

This is looking like bad ram or corrupt system files.

Just got rid of three different torjans and worms...that were going undetected by norton and AVG..... and guess what... my connection works fine.... A big thanks to everyone that gave some input.

How did you find out about them?
