Hi all, just finished building my new computer, and decided to hook the new one up to the internet, and let the old one go.
Ran the inetwizard, put could not get it to work
Called teck support and after an hour on the phone was told that everything was ok on their end, and that my computer would not "Grab an IP address". A teck support person will come to check it next wed.
Could this be something in the BIOS, or an unpluged wire?
Any help is much appreciated.
I am in Canada, on Shaw cable, high speed.
A Solteck MOBO, Windows XP home. Don't know what else to tell you, if any additional information will help please let me know.

If your mobo has onboard LAN, make sure you have enabled it in BIOS. If you installed a separate NIC card, check your Device Manager to make sure there are no conflicts.

edit: that was assuming you are using ethernet to connect.

Hth,

so your hooking it up directly to the cable modem
'
that is a bad way to do it

you really should have a router in there if for no other reason to have the haedware firewall.

check your settings in the network connections, make sure they are correct.

run ipconfig from the comand prompt and post the display here.

Modem and cable are the same ones that I am using now with the old computer and all is fine with it. Yes, light is on the modem. When I plug the modem into the new computer, the RJ45 connector, the oversize telephone jack, there is also a light there.
My ISP says that everything is OK on there end, its just that my computer, the new one, will not grab an IP address.
Go Figure!!!!!!!!!!!!1

ok I think I know what is going on,

your isp is setting you connection with the mac address of the old computer, with the new one you need to let it know that it is going to be a differant mac address so it can connect to it.

maybe
in ipconfig you can do the release and renew option to set everything to the new mac address of the new nic.

with the address you posted, your not getting anything from the isp to connect

Power the cable modem OFF for about 30 minutes, restart it, and when the cable light comes on steady, reboot your computer.
