I recently bought a used Intellimouse Explorer for real cheap. It came with nothing but the mouse, no instructional booklet, software, or the little USB to PS/2 adapter. The problem is, I can't get USB on my computer working, so I need that little adapter. I've asked several computer and office supply stores, and my local electronics supply. Nobody can get me one of these adapters.

But, I can get ahold of USB ports and mini-din plugs. I could solder them together and make the adapter myself, but I don't know the pin configuration. If anybody can find this out for me, I would be very pleased.

Either that, or someone could direct me to someplace were such an adapter could be found, ready made that is.

Thanks in advance.

Well, what problems do you have with usb ?

Is USB enabled in BIOS ?

Is USB displayed in device manager ?

Do you have Win98, ME, or Win95B/C ?

Do you have Mainboard with VIA Chipset ? If so, did you install the via 4 in 1 driver ?

etc.

The only options in the Bios regarding USB are Assign IRQ to USB, currently enabled. And USB Keyboard support, currently disabled.

Under USB controller in device manager, there is displayed USB Root hub and a VIA PCI to USB Universal host controller. When the mouse is connected, it is not present in device manager.

I'm running Windows 98

Yes, the mobo has a VIA chipset, and it has the 4 in 1 driver installed.

In all attempts the install the mouse, I go through the following. I unplug my current serial mouse, and plug in the Explorer. When the explorer is plugged in, nothing else happens, there is no window saying windows has detected new hardware. If the computer is restarted, windows tells me no mouse is detected.

When plugged in, the explorer responds sporadically. Once in a while if I try to move it, it lights up, but immediately turns back off.

A couple weeks ago I successfully installed the mouse. I plugged it in, it was detected by windows, the driver was installed. But I got the same problem, it would only light up and move the cursor occasionally.

I don't know if the mouse is totally dead, or if it's just a USB problem. So I was going to try to adapt it to PS/2 just to see what happens. But I can't find that adapter.

Okay, one question ?
When the mouse is plugged in, does the light come up or is it totally dark. If it's totally dark then anything has to be wrong (it has to be wrong anyway since mouse is not recognized).

Well, I have MS Intellimouse with IntelliEye, it came with that adapter, so I have it currently here.

I'll try to find out the connections. If you want, I can send that little thing to you.
Just send me your address (mail to RJ.A320@t-online.de )
Oh well, t-online-flatrate ends tomorrow. They didn't tell me anything. So if that email address seems to be dead the next days (hopefully not), send it to Airbusflotte@gmx.de
Well, choose one of the two email addresses, both belong to me :)

One thing you should know: I live in germany, far away from canada. It can take a little time to send you the item, not sure how much. Just that you know that.

When the mouse is plugged in, it won't light up right away. Sometimes, If moved, it might light up for a split second, but this is very infrequent. Aside from these times, it won't light up at all.

I'd be grateful if you could figure out the connections. But you don't have to send me that connector, I don't want to put you through the cost and hassle. Thanks for the offer though, very gracious of you. :D

Well, Cosmyre, I made an electical circle with one LED there and wanted to test which usb connection is connected with which PS/2 pin.

All information I could get is that one USB-pin is connected with 3 PS/2 ones, and the other ones. . with nothing ? I can't say anything about them.

Did you fix that problem in the last several days or is it still present ?
I still have the adapter here. If you want it. . .

Sorry for the late reply...

Well, first of all I thank you for your most kind offer, but I fear it will do me no good. I went into Future Shop today and had them test my mouse on a system to see if it was my computers USB, or if the mouse is crap. Well, it gives the same problem on any system. So, at least my computer isn't having major USB problems, but the mouse is most certainly dead.

Man, what a month for peripherals. My old mouse started making high pitch squeaking noises when it moves horizontally. My keyboard started sticking on the M key, and just yesterday the J died completely, so I had to replace it with an older, far less comfortable keyboard. And now my Explorer is confirmed dead. Oh well, that's what I get for paying the lowest possible price for crappy used hardware. I hope I've learned my lesson.

Now I get to go out on a buying binge, and spend all the money I saved on buying used stuff.:D

Sorry to hear this, Cosmyre :( At least you know that the USB is working. But once you got a new keyboard and mouse, you won't have problems for years :)
