Well I'm still stuggling in my saga to upgrade the AGP card in this legacy 440BX MB.

This is the motherboard that I have:
http://www.pchardware.ro/Reviews/review.php?id=10

This motherboard has an AGP that is keyed for 3.3V and supports AGP 1X/2X.

The Radeon 9800 Pro physically fits into my motherboard AGP slot. The card itself is keyed in two places 3.3V and 1.5V(or 0.8V). However, after installing it and connecting the power cable it gives one long and 2 short beeps and fails to POST. I have no video, only a black screen.

I think I may have discovered why.... is it because the 9800 is designed to run 1.5V or .08V only? See this link:
http://www.ati.com/support/faq/agpchart.html

I think I may have to run the Radeon 9700 since it says 3.3V/1.5V/0.8V...

Does anyone want to weigh in on this analysis?

I dont think your radeon will run at agp 3x. Though there seems to be no difference i can run my 9700 @ 4x or 8x you wont notice any difference between the both of them, if you dont have AGP 4 i dont think your card will run at an acceptable speed, it will not let me select any speed lower than 4x so my suggestion is that you need faster AGP slot.. dont take my word for it though i might be wrong.

Wait for someone else to reply.

You cannot use a 9600 or 9800 in that motherboard because of the voltage issue, not the speed issue. The strongest card that will work is a 9500/9700, and of course it will be running at 2X.

The 9800 and 9600 series will only run 4x or 8x,the 9700 and 9500 series will run 2x,4x,or 8x,all earlier Radeons will run 2x or 4x.I think the 9700 and 9500 will even run 1x.Not sure
