I recently purchased an ATI 9800 Pro and am having fantastic results with the new card except for two instances. The first occurs whenever i attempt to play Counterstrike. I enter Steam and change the settings to lighten up the screen and also fiddle around with the Gamma settings, but no matter what i do, the games always shows dark (ie. tunnels and doorways are very dark, unable to discern teammates from foes). The second problem is when i go into the control panel and change my AGP settings, i'm prompted for a reboot and when i do it and check the settings again, they are returned to their original settings. Is anyone else having these problems or knows how to correct the situation???

did you download the new catalyst drivers?

Yes, I've already downloaded and installed the Catalyst drivers but there is no change. It's really frustrating because some of my graphics intensive games are running like champs but an old game like CS is working like crap.

Which AGP settings are you trying to change? If your trying to move from 4x to 8x maybe your motherboard does not support 8x so it will not change to it. Dont see why increasing the gama is not brightening the screen tho.

Have you turned up the brightness and contrast on your monitor manually?

Yes, i have the latest version of Catalyst drivers and my motherboard also supports AGP 8.0. I've managed to change the shading a bit within the game so i can differentiate between Ts and CTs but am still having video problems and don't know if it is the mo-board or the video card. When i try to change the AGP settings to 8, the system reboots and then i check the settings again and AGP is turned off. I bought the Mo-board (asus A7n8X-E Deluxe) and video card (ATI Radeon 9800 Pro) together from Newegg and don't want to go through the RMA process, but will have to unless i can figure out the problem.

Just a minor vocab fix, its AGP 3.0 (the same as 8x AGP). Also have you tried overclocking your video card? that can lead to many problems.

Oops, sorry about that slipup. No, i haven't tried overclocking the video card. I'm overclocking the CPU a bit, but nothing extremely agressive.

1. Declock it to stock till you solve the AGP issue.

2. Have you tried different versions of the NForce drivers?

3. Have you turned fast writes off in the Smartgart and, if applicable, in the bios?

Also the bios may have an option to change the AGP setting there. You could try that instead of doing it in windows. Have you tried adjusting the gama in other games to see if it gets lighter or darker? Maybe it is only this game that the difficulty is with.

I've reset the display settings back to stock and have downloaded the latest Catalyst drivers and re-installed. I can now adjust the AGP settings and also correct some of the problems with Counterstrike. This problem is so wierd because I'm not having problems in any other games other than CS. Everything else is working as intended. It's really frustrating because I'm an avowed CS addict. I no longer feel that it's a problem with the card, but with Steam/CS. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

No, I meant set the CPU back to stock speed till it's solved.

Both the CPU and video card have been reverted to stock settings. Fast write in the Smartgart settings is currently off and the BIOS settings are the same as when i first powered on the system. The problem went away for a while and has now returned, so I'm thinking of sending the video card back to Newegg.

I had that same problem too when I had the ASUS A7n8X-E Deluxe.
Try completely uninstalling all ATI drivers before installing fresh ones, OR

Try the Omega drivers

How did you resolve your problem? Did the Omega drivers work for you?

I believe I was in the midst of upgrading to XP. So overall installing XP worked for my problems. I did use the Omega drivers for about a day or 2 under W2K, however, at this point; I forgot if it had made a difference.
