I am attempting to locate and purchase a top quality DVD-ROM with a black bezel for a new computer build (a DVD burner will be added later--awaiting the new 12X Plextor or dual layer Sony). Plextor was my first choice, but I found in searching for a new Plex DVD-ROM that they and some other major brands apparently no longer make DVD-ROMs, but have switched to combo players/burners.

It appears that the main major brand black-faced DVD-ROM out there is the Sony DDU1621, but even it is no longer listed on the Sony Storage Web site as being available. Also found were more DVD-ROMS with "minor" brands that are unfamiliar to me and are sold by the major computer retail outlets.

Thus, I am asking for recommendations as to the best DVD-ROM that is still available.

You can't go wrong with LG and Pioneer.

Avoid Samsung drives.

Here's a Sony: (I'm hesitant to fully recommend a Lite-On DVD drive - they are pretty noisy)

Note that it doesn't come with software - you need some kind of DVD player software. You may already have some - a lot of video cards come with it as do some motherboards.
