USB ports

my specs are in my sig, but I'm having troubles with my USB ports. This is on a recent build, and I'm still working some bugs out. Now that case I have, ASPIRE (Turbo Case)Black ATX Mid-Tower Case with 350W Power Supply, Model "ATXB5KLW/350" (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-144-042&depa=1 if you would like to take a look) has two USB ports in the front, and two in the back. Now my keyboard is working out of one of the ports in the back. But when I try to use a flash card reader (http://www.buy.com/retail/clearance/product.asp?sku=70011121&loc=114&sp=1) it won't register in the from the front ports at all, and when I try it in the open back port when boot up, it shuts right back down within seconds (I think it's when the posting reaches that USB port with the reader in it). Now I haven't tried to "hot" insert/boot/ etc, esp since the failure at a standard boot. Any suggestions of what's going on?

Are you running XP and did it come with SP1? That's necessary for usb 2.0 recognition/initializing. If SP1 is loaded and the usb's aren't working, try this fix from looneycooney:

With Win98, almost all USB devices require you install a driver and reboot before trying to plug the device in for the first time. If you have 98FE, many USB devices aren't even supported, you need 98SE.

Well, here's the strange thing, it was working when I had my hd's, cards and os in my old gateway, could it be something with the new mobo then?

absutely, if the system was installed with a differant motherboard, some things may not work right with the new motherboard, and need to be reinstalled,
did the new motherboard come with a cd that had some drivers on to be installed ?

If you didn't wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows from scratch when you moved it, you need to use what we call the "ENUM" trick.

ok, one thing before I try that enum trick, and to make sure I understand what I'm about to do. When my HD was sitting in the old comp, it did have all the settings for that comp's mobo and cpu, then when moving everything over to the new comp (basically just a new mobo, cpu, and a flashy case) and it did reload everything, in basic, layman...aka homer terms... when it did reload, the new settings went over the old and it could be causing conflicts. So using the enum trick, that will remove the all the settings, then reload the drivers to and it will seem like a fresh window load? again basically in Homer speak

Correct - and I do recommend you flush the whole enum, it will be a lot neater when you are done. You have a ton of inactive registry entries in the enum right now possibly causing conflicts. Follow the procedure and it will all fall into place.

ok, I did the enum trick, and I think there's no more probs with the usb's (haven't tried them yet, but no conflicts showing). I now have an IRQ problem with my PCI vid card (thinking about just getting an AGP now) but I'm getting an RMA conflict also. Got to love comps :-)

Are there any flagged devices in device manager? Did you take care of the 2 keyboards, DMA controllers, and video cards as indicated in the enum thread?

possibly, did not have a duplicate keyboard, but not sure about the DMA (how can you tell what it is assigned too?) and I tried to totally delete the vid card through the device manager and reload, but still get the same IRQ conflict, now I am also getting a conflict with an unknown PCI card, but have not been able to locate what's it talking about, all I have is the sound and vid card in (could it be the onboard sound?)

Have you reinstalled the Via chipset drivers (4 in 1)?

Is the onboard sound disabled in the bios?

I hit yes, it loads something and I then get this: best driver is already installed "c:windows\INF\MACHINE.INF"

From the enum thread:

Now, go into device manager. You will probably have some yellow flags. You will probably have 2 items that are flagged with unflagged duplicates - the keyboard and the DMA controller. Remove the entry that is NOT flagged. If you have 2 display adapters, one will be flagged - usually the "standard VGA" will not be flagged and the actual adapter will be flagged. Remove the unflagged standard VGA.

Need further clarification?

Look in the keyboards section - there will be two keyboards, remove the one that is NOT flagged. Look in System Devices - there will be two direct memory access controllers, remove the one that is NOT flagged. Look in display adapters - there will be a flagged GeForce and an unflagged Standard VGA - remove the Standard VGA.

Well GLC, another fine job, after completing the steps as you mentioned (twice :-)) it worked, I have no conflicts and I want to say that everything actually looks better on my computer. Thanks for your help, you should get paid for this...lol

I have a question, I was wondering why removing the working duplicates, resolve the conflicts? You would think that you would want to remove the non working ones. I understand the reasoning with the video drivers, but with the DMA and keyboard? Have to admit, that was a neat little trick.

I don't know exactly why either - but it happens that way every time. The devices install twice - and for some reason the one that winds up flagged is the one that's correct and the dupe is keeping it from using the resources it needs.
