In considering the use of one optical drive in a new computer build (for installation of XP and other software as well as burning CDs after XP is installed) is it possible to use a CD-RW as the only optical drive? Will Windows XP find a CD-RW to be used as a CD-ROM in a new build when it is time to install XP (later I will add a DVD burner)?

yes, it should be detected as a optical drive and work fine.

That will work fine. One possible inconvenience is that to copy a CD it would have to be copied to the hard drive first.

Works fine. OEM outfits do it all the time.

That works fine, but you could also find a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive as well for comparable price, and get the best of three worlds

Windows "sees" CD-RWs as CD-ROM drives...it's the burning software that makes them "burners".
