im tryin to get into linux over the summer cause im takin a class in operating systems in the fall and i was just wondering if any of you have any experience with knoppix (using knoppixx from a recommendation from a friend as an alternative to having to change my file format on one of my hard drives) well my problem is that i get it to boot just fine my problem is that its all in german do any of you know if i simply downloaded the wrong version or if there is a way to change the language (it said english version when i downloaded it??)

No, you got the right version. The person who created knoppix is German. There is a way to get it to load in english, but without the system in front of me I can't tell you how to do it. It should be on the load page when you start it. You can try www.knoppix.net for help. I just wanted to post to let you know that you have the right version. It is a great system, one of the best of the linux flavors in my opinion. Good luck with it.

When you boot of the CD, type (after your kernel):
lang="us"

eg> knoppix lang="us"

I've never had a language problem with knoppix, but I think what LIGhTBoY suggested should work. Slax is another bootable distribution based on slackware linux. If you're taking a class on operating systems you can also try a bootable bsd distribution called freesbie, based on freeBSD.
Check out www.osnews.com, it might help you with the class a bit, and www.distrowatch.com is a good recource for all linux and bsd distributions.
