Dedicated Server Machine

I want to make a dedicated server machine that is a mini ATX. I'm not really sure if mini ATX is the word but i was thinking something around this size...... http://www.cappuccinopc.com/cubepc.asp . I've built a computer before but never anything like a server or anything as small as that. Are there special parts needed? For one, Is it possible to make your own server machine, and how would one go about doing this. Also I want it to beable to carry it to lan partys and such. But most of the time i would like it to just act as a game server. This machine would be a pretty high end system for strictly the server and gaming. If anyone knows any good parts that wouold be apreciated also.

sorry :(, i didnt think you could get alot of power out of a case so small. correct me if im wrong but i havent had a awful lot of experiance with those cases anyway.

Well it doesnt have to be that small but i was looking forward to being able to carry it around easily. My main concern is how to set up a server?

well what sort of games would you be hosting?, usually its a matter of preferance for the OS some people find linux or windows better.

Go to Quick Nav on the PCMech home page. Under the drop down menu look for "build your own" and hi-lite it and it will take you to a tutorial page. there you will find info for building your own server. It is on the left side of the page.

You can get plenty of power out of those little things. I have seen some running P4 3.0 w/800mhz FSB, Radeon 9800XT, 1GB RAM, the works. All at normal operating temps.

also i will have to admit......i havnt read very far into the tutorial yet but it says "LAN games" and althou i would like to be able to do that what i really want to do is make a dedicated server ont he internet....so my friends and i can share files, and play against eachother at seperate homes.

I read the entire thing and it was very helpful, although it didnt say anything about creating a game server that i saw?.......alll help is apreciated.

For an online game server the main thing you need is a good internet connection. Haveing a fast processor and a ton of ram won't help if you have a slow dsl/cable upstream connection.

To setup a computer as a game server you have to get the server software for each game, which you can get online.

ok well my cable internet connection is pretty fast....i get about 30 fps on day of defeat most of the time, and i am planning on making a better system to run my server on. Anyone happen to know where I could get the Day of Defeat server software?

It's usually the upload speed that gets you with a game server. Just because your download speed is fast doesn't mean it will work well. Go to www.dslreports.com and test your connection. You will most likely see that the upload is much slower than the download.

Your upload is 359kb/sec. That's good. It should work ok. Most people with broadband only have around 128kb/sec upload. I happen to have a very fast connection at 5.6mb/sec download and 1.3mb/sec up but that is because my ISP doesn't cap my speeds like most do.

Ok well at least i know it should work now. But what software do I need, And everything about web servers confuse me. I'm new to frontpage and just made a temporarty anyxhost.com account and can't figure out how to get the homepage i made as the homepage of my site? I know thats a little off topic but what i really want to know is the software necessary for running a gaming server and a web server.

This is from the DoD forum for setting up your own server.

Games usually come with the software to run a server. Such as DoD.

Also are you talking about running a webserver from this computer, for your webpages?

You don't need a great computer for a game server. I ran a counter-strike server on my server computer in my sig and it ran just fine.

Yes i was planning on running my own web server and game server on the new server machine.....everything about web servers confuse me, Would i still have to buy a domain name, and would i stilll have to pay monthly for hosting if i had my own server?.....how exactly does that wrk

If you plan on the site being popular you need to have it hosted from some place like godaddy.com, 359kb/s isn't going to handle it very well.

well you can get a free domain (www.noip.com) with software installed from there it will automatically update your ip to that domain. as for webservers apache is usually the best but i use appserv (www.sourceforge.net/projects/appserv), a mix of http/php/mysql. and then for ftp server all you need is the software, theres loads.

well the site wouldnt be much, maybe 50 users being members would be all. And could someone please in the most simple language tell me what it takes to publish a website.......and prefreably how to get everything, free.
