Outlook Express and Outlook 2000?

I've been told that since I now run Win 2000, I should migrate my email to Outlook 2000. What are the advantages of Outlook 2000 over OE5 or 6? My reason for asking the question is that OE6 has become VERY sluggish recently (takes several seconds to change from , say, inbox to deleted items.) and my advisor tells me that it's not properly compatible with Win 2000, and that backing up Outlook is a lot easier.

Any help gratefully received.

Outlook is Outlook Express with all the bells and whistles. There are many more options with Outlook.
You get Outlook as part of the MS Office Suite, whether it be 97, 2000,.....

I would first run a spyware scan and of course an updated anti-virus. Sluggishness is a symptom of virii, adware, or even trojans.

Thanks for the information, Kubie, much appreciated. I had scanned with the latest updates of Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware, and my Antivirus (AVG) is bang up to date. I also use Sygate's Firewall. The system is clean, apart from a problem with the DSO Expkloit reported by Spybot. I had also tried Trend Micro's Housecall, and that shows no infections or whatever. All very mysterious.

Ok firstly, Outlook Express 6 is 100% compatible with Windows 2000. I mean it ships with the CD, right? Hard to imagine that Microsoft would bundle it up if it were incompatible. Secondly, if all you are going to be using Outlook for is for email, then you're worse off with it - for just an email program it is a horrible piece of bloat that doesnt even do it right. Yes, if you are noticing an issue with OE6 performance, you will find outlook better, but I assure you that the change is cosmetic (just because you change a flat Goodyear tire with a new Michellin doesnt mean Michellin's are vastly superior)
Your OE working slow could be an unrelated issue. Have you tried removing windows messenger? If so, it could be a result of an improper removal.
As an alternative, there is another reason for slow performance could be as a result of other s/w - Norton system works is one such culprit. OE5 sluggishness was detailed here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;271510

You may just need to clean up your OE. Take out the trash, sort all the old mail in the Inbox that you want to save into other folders, and then compact all folders. The Inbox was not designed to be a holding folder for all your mail.

Thanks for all the good advice. In my own defence I should say that I only have 140 items in the Inbox, I empty the deleted items folder daily and once a week, I archive my folders.

A clean install is, unfortunately, not an option. The installation disks for some of the software were lost and cannot now be replaced.

I don't use messenger but I'll check out the knowledge base article.

You could try running a repair of IE - this should also repair OE.
