Ok so we're having some things done to my room for my computer that's coming, or rather my mum's old one until my new computer arrives, getting a surge protector plug socket panel fitted to my bedroom wall, a phone jack (my mum will have a phone jack fitted in her room so the networking can take place but I just want one in my room aswell, it won't be used but I just want one to be there just in case I need it later for anything, like a phone or something,. Or possibly if we change connections and such), and my mum should have an extra power outlet fitted so she can plug the modem/router in.

Now, we know what we're doing, retiring the modem that we use now and taking the dsl wire out of the back of it along with the filter and fitting it to the back of the modem/router, along with the filter in my mum's newly installed phone jack. Then we have to install the modem/router with the CD that came with it, doing this on both computers. Then we'll put the 13ft long ethernet cable (13ft, so it reaches from my mum's room to mine) into the back of the modem/router and then run it to the back of my computer.

Just double checking this post, are we doing everything correctly? Is there -anything- we've missed out?

The only thing I need to emphasize is you do not use a filter on the line to the router - you use filters on all the other devices on the same line such as phones, etc. Each computer will connect to the router with an Ethernet cable. You do this *before* setting up the router.

You do not use the CD on both computers - you only use it on one, to set up the router. The computers use standard TCP/IP networking with DHCP to connect to the router, if your local area connections are set up properly, you won't even need to use the CD to connect to the router from either machine. The CD is simply to assist you in doing the internal router setup, which can be done with a web browser instead. Time to read the manual that came with the router.
