okay i am running a Dell Inspiron 5100 wif a Dell Truemobile 1400 Dual WLan Mobile (My WiFi card). I have been given access to the school's network, including the gajillion chracter "password" thing to access. But even with the network admin helping me, I can not connect to the WiFi. It will detect the network, attempt a connection, but it will not connect. I can connect to other WiFi hotspots, but not the schools'. can someone tell me what i am doing wrong?
im quite new to wireless networks myself but i have expeienced this problem before.
even if a signal is detected that doesnt mean you can acceess it because your network configuation has not been set up.
try setting up a connection using the home/business connection wizard in win XP.
play with the settings a bit.

are you getting the network icon (in the lower right corner that looks like 2 flashing computer monitors)? If you are I assume there is a red X on it? Right click on that and select Open network connections. Find the correct connection ( EX. Wireless Network Connection 2) and right click on that, then select properties. Click on the Wireless networks tab at the top and is the correct network showing up in the available networks box here?
The admin should be able to give you the correct configuration settings, are the ips dynamic or static? Does he need to give you an IP address to use?

on the icon below (2 monitors flashing) click them and click open all wireless connections and choose the wireless router that your school is using then click connect...you will be connected.

to connect to a wireless network you need:
1) the SSID of the network access points
2) if the networking is running 802.1x, port security or the like, you need to be added to the back end servers to allow you to connect (your network admin would handle that)
3) the encryption key for the WEP encryption (if it is running) and that needs to be EXACT.
