I know this isnt a hard ware problem but it will be if I dont fix it fast. I uninstalled Norton 2002 and downloaded PC-Cillin 2003, but i didnt have the activation key so I uninstalled it. I tried too get my Norton 2002 back by using the gateway restore program but apparently it doesnt work that way. I had a virus last time I scanned and I want to fix it. If I install WinXP Professional, does it come with a anti-virus because thats the only thing I can think of. I dont have a cd for Norton and I dont know if it came on the laptop. Please help.

No, the OS itself doesn't come with an AV. What I recommend you do is to go to Grisoft (www.grisoft.com) and download the free version of AVG.

You can also go to Trend Micro's site and run House Call (http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp).

It sometimes comes as a package with propietary computers, such as gateways.

Anyway, give AVG a shot. It's free, not to mention a pretty good package.

I've always been a McAfee fan. It's done me good so i stand by it. Either way, most packages have a trial version you can install to wipe your drive clean.

If you still dont get it cleaned, or dont use a virus program, your only safeguard is to do a reformat on the drive (wiping all your data clean and starting new). Since it's a work computer this may not be an option... although it is your best. :)

I personally have had some horrendous experiences with McAfee - it's let several viris through, until I installed TrendMicro's PC-Cillin. Personally, I highly recommand NOD32 - it's a verry efficient antivirus system, taking up very little resources. It was given the most 100% VirusBulletin award by VirusBulletin - an unprecedented task of all AVs.

Hope that helps,
kram

Is it free or do I pay a fee?

NOD32 is a paid AV but I assure you, it's well worth it. I have it on my Win98SE desktop right next to me and it has been working healthy for some time. It's 30-day Eval for free and 40USD for a year's liscence.

That's interesting that you find that NOD32 is a great product. The reason I say this is because I was reading through the current issue of PCMag, and they gave NOD32 a 1.5/5 rating. According to their tests, it only picked up 2 of 69 infected files.

Yeah - we actually had a big debate about this in the Security/Privacy forum. I'm personally not in a 100% reliance with PC Mag - they rated McAfee pretty well and we know how good McAfee is. I mean - if you selected a certain virus for testing, any AV has a risk of not catching it. Even Symantec's Norton AV. I personally don't believe any magazine is unbiased. Look at the latest issue of PC World where nod32 performed very well. Upon the advice of listmates here I bought nod and I am very happy with it.
