Why does it take so long?

On my main computer, specs are in my signature, a system scan with Spybot takes about 4 minutes. However, on my other system, specs below, it takes about a half hour. Both are running v1.3 and are up to date. The settings are the same on both as well. Both search for 13,758 objects. Why does it take so long to complete a scan on my other computer? Does the speed of the hard drive really make that much difference or is it something else? I don't run it on that computer very often because of how long it takes.

just a guess. i also have seen spybot run lightning fast on some but not on others and decided it was due to these two factors but would love to hear another theory.

What other programs, like AV, are you running while running Spybot? Try shutting them down before you run and see if it makes a difference.

AVG runs on both machines. The processes list is almost identical. Another thing that has me wondering is the fact that I recently ran a scan on a friends 233mhz with 40GB 5400 RPM hard drive and 64MB of RAM and it took about 5 minutes. My K-6 500mhz system just seems really slow overall. Slower than my old K-6 233mhz and I have yet to figure out why. It can't even play music or simple Windows sound effects without crackling, popping, and skipping. Internet browsing is also slow. It was the same when it had Windows 98 on it. The speed actually improved when I installed XP but it's still much more sluggish than it should be.

Just for kicks, have you ever downloaded CPU-Z to see how it identifies your cpu? Maybe a fsb jumper isn't right. BTW, if you board will handle a K6-2/533 AFX chip 2.2v core/3.3v i/o, I've got one gathering dust in my parts cabinet. PM me if you're interested.

HERE (http://www.msnusers.com/1987PlymouthVoyager/Documents/Stairwell%20CPU) is what CPU-Z said. The motherboard manual says the following:

"Intel Pentium Processor, Pentium with MMX technology, AMD K5/K6 Cyrix 6x86L, 6x86MX & idt C6 operating at 120~500MHz with 321 ZIF socket 7 provides scalability to accept faster processors in the future."

I don't know if that means a 533MHz would work or not.

For some reason I can't get you cpu-z link to work. Instead msn messenger tries to open. I checked the motherboard compatability info at AMD for the 533 and, while the Epox board is not recommended among the recommended ones, all the ones that are listed show it working along with the older chips too. The way your manual is worded it sure sounds like it would work. I saved it from an HP with a dead mobo. The ole swollen cap problem. Got the heatsink too, but I used the fan to replace a noisy one. I'll never use this thing and it would be good to see someone get some use out of it. If you want, PM you name and address and I'll mail it to you to try. If it works you can pay me the shipping costs - no charge for the chip. If it doesn't work, throw it away. How's that for a good deal?

Well I output that file from CPU-Z as an HTML file but Windows didn't recognize it. I clicked open with My IE 2 and it worked. I guess that didn't apply to your computer. :) I will consider that offer Panama. I will get back to you.
