I have a gig ethernet card onboard with my motherboard and I've been thinking of upgrading to a gigaswitch for my home lan. Does anyone here have experience with one of these set ups? My main question is there a noticeable speed difference?

it depends....

in regular PC to PC file transfers and all things being equal, there is a boost in overall transfer speeds.

if you are using it to access the internet, then no, there is no performance boost.

You will see a difference, however you won't use the full potential of gigabit lan.
For my 7200rpm hard drives even firewire can't be fully used, but there is a noticeable boost comparing to fast ethernet.
