Thermal Paste

Im building my computer, and i just installed the processor. I didn't buy any thermal paste, but the CPU fan that came with my Athalon 64 3500+ has some on the back, but how does it work? Do i just install the fan, and the thermal paste works, or do i need to brush it with water or something? is it imperative that i get after market thermal paste for the CPU?

THANKS

You just put the fan on and the Thermal pad will kind of melt and form a heat transferer. The pad is just enough to hold the heat put out by that processor, if you are planning to overclock I would get some Artic Silver 5 thermal paste

I might overclock in the future, but for now it should be ok?

EDIT: I just tried to put it on, and i couldn't get it to clip, so now the paste is on the CPU unevenly. Does this matter? now do i need thermal paste?

How uneven is it? Are there gaps in the coverage?

If you use something other than the thermal pad that comes on the AMD heatsink you'll void the warranty. Overclocking will void the warranty too. Something to think about.

If the pads not seated properly it can cause overheating

There are two horazontal slits that are not covered. The fan is on now though.

So is my warranty void? I wasn't planning to overclock that soon. I was going to try out my computer first, and see if i liked it how it is first.

Just slits? I wouldn't worry about it...the pad will melt a bit and the coverage should even out. But keep an eye on the CPU temps.

Cool. THANKS

Also, i bought a DFI Lan Party SLI motherboard, and if im just going to use one graphics card for now, which slot should i put it in? I couldn't tell from the manual, or at least the quck start guide, i should probably read the entire manual...

EDIT: I just found it now, im suposed to use the top slot, but i can't get the nVIDIA 6800 Ultra to fit into the slot in my case for the backing... Is this something due to my case, or should the graphics card fit in all cases?
