strange "powerdown-like" noise

Hello,
first of all, sorry for my english.. I'll try to be as clear as possible!

A couple of days ago I changed my case... I took my old PC, removed every component with care except for the power supply (it was getting old, and however a new one was included in the new case) and re-built everything in the new case.

The PC runs without problems, but sometimes I hear a noise (like a "click-click") coming from somewhere in the front panel (I think near the power/reset switches, but I'm not sure). This happens with no apparent reason and no regularity: sometimes when WinXP is loading, sometimes while I'm working on the pc, sometimes when it's simply running without any action from me. It has no effect on the functionality of the system.. it keeps running without problems.

I could be wrong, but the noise reminds me of the "click" I hear when the system powers down.

I'm worried about it, also because it didn't happen with the old case (or at least I didn't notice it).

Thanks in advance for any hint!

Hi ege, and welcome to PC Mech!

Would you say that the noise is coming from the area of the Hard Drive? The click you describe and the "randomness" of its occuring could be an indication that the hard drive is getting ready to fail and I would recommend that as a precaution you back-up your important data... just in case it does die.

Hi Stryker, thanks for the quick reply!

Yes the noise could come also from the hard drive... I have to say that the first thing I noticed was that the noise happened when the HD was working hard (example: loading or saving a 150MB image), but I discarded this option because the HD is really new (I bought it 1 or 2 months ago - by the way, it's a Maxtor 80GB). Isn't there a way to check the health of the HD? And, if it turns out that the problem is the HD, what could be the cause?

thanks

Hiya ege,
Manufacturers will usually have diagnostic utilities on their websites. Do a Google search for "maxtor diagnostic" and it looks like the first match is what you need. Even though the drive is new, it could be defective. I think if it were me, I would exchange/RMA it to be safe. I've seen drives last for years, but I've also seen them fail after a few months.

Run the Maxtor diagnostic and see how it goes.
