In my opinion, Sony laptops are more flash than function and are overpriced. I also have soured on Toshibas, their quality has fallen off in the past couple of years. IBM and Dell are still the top dogs in my book.

I have to agree with GLC on the Dell Inspiron. My girlfriend got one before lawschool and that was her only computer. Therefore that machine was ran through the gauntlet for three years. It was on all day every day and still runs great. I really like it's capabilities. And suprised it survived as hard as that thing was used.
Not to confuse, but I recently got an HP DV600(I believe that is the model). I have not used it alot, but so far I am also really impressed with it's media features. And it is really thin. Nice screen too. I too would stay away from Sony. Father got one and not only was it over priced, but the outside parts them selves started to fall apart. It ran okay, but for the price I think it was poorly constructed. |

I have to agree with everything that has been posted so far. I'm a psych student at FSU and being the tech geek in my group of friends, I've seen my share of laptops. Sony makes some good parts. Their optical drives are great, but their laptops are a lot of form and not all that hot function.
As everyone else has said Dells are good laptops, IBM if you can take the hit to your cash flow are good. Really more and more I am drawn to white box laptops. Try reading up over at www.notebookforums.com You do pay it, but if you know where to shop you can get exactly what you want in a custom laptop.

Nice notebook, can't beat the price with a stick either. Definitely add some ram, buy it from Crucial.

Nope. You may want to add more than 256 because that's shared memory for the video.
