video card advice

Hi

a friend of mine has asked me to build him a pc that he can use to hook his digital video camera up to, and do a little editing

here's what i have so far

dvd-writer: 46euro
AMD Athlon 64 +2800 ( 754 ) + Cooler € 125,14

ASUS K8V-SE Deluxe ( chipset --> K8T800) [S754] € 74,9
ram: CORSAIR VALUE Memory 512 Mb. DDR @ 333 € 60
voeding ANTEC TruePower 330 Watt ( TRUE 330PEC ) € 55,44
hd: Maxtor Plus9 :120Gb. - 7200rpm - 8Mb. (SATA) € 90,41
total 451.89 euro wich leaves about 100 euro

these are the optional video cards, i know that you need a differennt type of video-card for 2d vs for 3d images so i'm not really sure wich one to chose

SAPPHIRE Radeon 9600 ( AGP ) 256 Mb. € 85,7
SAPPHIRE Radeon 9600 XT ( AGP ) 128 Mb. € 104,18
SAPPHIRE Radeon 9600 XT ( AGP ) 256 Mb. € 109,03
GIGABYTE Radeon 9600 PRO ( AGP ) 128 Mb. € 91,71
CLUB 3D Radeon 9600 PRO ( AGP ) 256 Mb. € 117,64
GIGABYTE GeForce FX 5200 ( AGP ) 128 Mb. € 72,03

thanks

Considering your main focus is on 2D Video Editing, you may want to consider spending even less on the graphics card and upping the RAM to a gig. I suggest a look at the Radeon 9200SE or Radeon 7000 for that matter and go for a gig of Corsair VSRAM.

I would up the ram to 1GB because you are working with video...those files can be pretty large and more ram will allow for easier and smoother editing

I think you'd better buy two rdram 512 MB, and SAPPHIRE Radeon 9600 XT (AGP ) 256 Mb. It's my choice.

A 9600XT is overkill, a lesser card will be fine, 256mb video ram is a plus for video editing though.

RDRAM? RAMBUS RAM? Why would he want RAMBUS RAM in a AMD based build? It's not even supported by that motherboard.

If you haven't already bought the motherboard and CPU, by going with the socket 754, you're locking yourself out for future upgrages. The 754 was discontinued.

thanks for the replys

i haven't bought annything yet, at this point i'm just doing research
i'll see if i can recalculate with another socket-type

the 939 sockets amd's are stil pretty expensive overhere i was thinking intel 775
ASUS P5P800S ( chipset --> Intel 848P ) [S775] € 70,23
INTEL Celeron D 345J 3,0 Ghz + Cooler € 135,44

i'd go with a full 800mhz intel but the price-difference is 50 € and i'm already over budget (500 € ) (I was thinking to reudce the hd to 80 gig if budgetisues arise)

if i put more ram in i'll have to go for a cheaper video-card:
CLUB 3D Radeon 9550 SE ( AGP ) 128 Mb. € 53,76
CLUB 3D Radeon 9250 ( AGP ) 256 Mb. € 54,9
GIGABYTE Radeon 9250 ( AGP ) 128 Mb. € 50,55
SAPPHIRE Radeon 9600 SE ( AGP ) 128 Mb. € 53,65
ASUS GeForce 5200 ( AGP ) 128 Mb. € 60
CLUB 3D GeForce 5200 ( AGP ) 256 Mb. € 61,61

i was thining the
CLUB 3D Radeon 9250 ( AGP ) 256 Mb. ???

While S754 will be discontinued soon, I'd still say go for it - it will serve you much better than a Celeron D with P5P800S. If you need to, go for an even cheaper graphics card but be sure to not skimp on processor and memory for a graphical editing system.

I'd personally stick with the A-64. And I'd go with the CLUB 3D Radeon 9250 ( AGP ) 256 Mb card.
