Please help, just built my pc all it does is click??
First off what a great forum, a huge wealth of information here!!!
I am having problems with a home build. I building 2 identicle pc for a freinds mother: Aopen Barebones unit consisting of Case AMD Sempron 2500+ 512M DDR PC3200 120GB Maxtor HDD ATI/RADEON/9800SE not sure what make of mobo it is 350w PSU The mobo and psu came pre installed in the case (took a little of the fun out of to me) and I had to install the CPU, RAM and HDD. Built one machine and everything went fine, it POSTed and then an installation of Win XP home later I am surfing the net. Now comes the other machine, installed everything to the instuctions again, powered up and all I get is a faint clicking sound coming from the speaker on the mobo. I have swaped every bit of equipment with the ones I know work from the other machine but to no avail. (HSF, CPU, RAM, Graphics card) I am now completly stuck and starting to wonder if it is the motherboard?? Can anyone please help, as I said I would have the machines built for her on thursday!!! Many thanks Tom

Step 1 would be to follow the directions here . You'll have to remove the motherboard in order to perform the tests correctly.
Second, if it still doesn't work, leave it out of the case and try the power supply from the known good system. Also, a reminder, if you've removed and reinstalled the cpu, it would be a good idea to now remove all the thermal compound from the bottom of the heat sink, clean off the cpu and hsf with alcohol and apply some new thermal paste like Arctic Silver 5. |

Thanks 4 the quick response!
Am trying that next, this is my first build and am a little confused as to why one machine built and turned on fine and why the other one wouldn't. Do you think it could the mobo?

You have to test it out of the case. The motherboard could be mounted improperly, shorting something out.

Got it out of the case!
I've got everything out of the case, it's all on my desk. I've followed the instructions from the link, Panama Red kindly pointed out to me. I've followed the intructions to the letter and now left with nothing but a lumb of slightly louder clicking wires.
Not to worry, what do you think I should do next? Pretty sure the psu is working, everything powers up, HSF, the mobo LED's come on and the HDD starts to spin, or can all of this happen a the psu still faulty.I have to say I'm starting to think that the mobo has had it as I have tried all of the parts in the other machine and it boots up everytime. Once again thanks for the help, I have posted in other forums, and found your help to be the most useful. Cheers Tom Morgan |

I've know tried the PSU from the 'clicking' PC in the non clicking pc and it boots straight into wondows no prob. I don't if I explained enough, the computer wont even POST the monitor just says no signal, and I get random DVD drive acces spins for a second then stops. But I have tried it with the working pc and it works.

Sounds like the motherboard is defective.
