Just finished my first build and having some major problems
. When I boot the computer, post screen appears and tells my model number, cpu, ram, etc. And says press delete to enter setup. Yet my computer wont recognize my keyboard. And it will not move beyond the post screen. My keyboard will not be recognized in either ps/2 port or USB ports. Same with the mouse! I am using a used hardrive that has not been wiped. It still contains all of the data including windows from the old system I was running. Will wiping the hardrive completely solve this problem? I really really need help! Thanks!

When you transplant a hard drive, you have to boot off of the windows cd and do a install repair.

I have booted the computer with xp in the drive, yet it only comes to the Post screen and just stops... wont go any further. Only a single beep on post then nothing else happens.

Does the mouse and keyboard work in another computer?
Have you tried different mice and keyboards in your new computer? If the mouse and keyboard work in another computer and the different mice and keyboards don't work in your computer I'd say the motherboard is defective and should be returned. Cricket

Yes I have used different keyboards and mice but I received the same results. I just think that it is too much of a coinsidence (<-- pretty sure I spelled that wrong) that the motherboard would be ignoring the peripherals from every port... I have a Mach Speed PM800BMS... and I dont know if there is just something I am doing wrong.

The only time I have seen both the mouse and keyboard not work at the same time is when they were in the wrong ports. Have you double checked this. They are usually color coded. If you have then do this old stand by.

Do the new mouse and keyboard work in other computers?
With just the core components assembled (motherboard, CPU, heatsink, RAM, video card, power supply and monitor) the keyboard should work without having to do anything else. If it and the mouse don't work, I'd say the problem is the motherboard. Cricket

The keyboard and mouse work in other computers. When I boot the computer, all of the lock leds on the keyboard light briefly as if it will power on... but then it doesnt come on. Would not having a keyboard detected prevent the computer to go beyond the POST screen? Are there any jumper settings I change to mabye make this work? Could my old i/o settings and drivers from my old motherboard that are on my non-wiped harddrive be conflicting with the new motherboard? I am trying to think of every possible solution before I RMA the board back. I have both mouse and keyboard in USB and they won't work. I have had both in ps/2 slots and both didnt work. Only the brief flash of activity and then off.
What all does post check for in what order? Mine shows cpu, and memory and thats all. Is that all that is meant to show? Has it just not reached the peripherals because it cannot detect something ahead of them? Last edited by S_Mitch; 08-11-2005 at 01:03 AM. |

The old OS on the old hard drive isn't causing this problem...but you can easily check by just disconnecting the IDE cable and power to the hard drive and then power the system up.

Before you RMA the board follow the link I supplied, which is essentialy what Cricket told you to do. Pull the Mobo out of the case and lay it on card board. Hook up the monitor, video card, cpu, one stick of memory and nothing else. Use a screwdriver to short the two prongs of the power sweitch on the mobo and listen for the POST beep and see if she boots up. If she does then hook up your keyboard and mouse and do the same thing. If she boots put it back in the case and see what component gets hooked up before it stops working.
Your old settings will not affect what you are experiencing, because the hard drive is not even being used until the system boots to it. Your running off the bios. |

Took it out of the case set it out on cardboard, made sure ram was in nice and snug, same with video card. Shorted the pins and it just stop at the post screen again. one beep. I am RMA ing it today. Thanks for all the suggestions

Again, the only way to find out is to CLEAR the CMOS and find out if that fixes the problem.
