splat First build, odd problem.

My most problematic new computer had a bad motherboard, so I bought another one. I recieved it today and rebuilt the PC, very nervously applying thermal paste for the first time. Everything worked great!! I installed Windows XP x64, then took my PC downstairs (it weighs 50lbs!) where my router is to get all the drivers from the net. I flipped the switch to 0 at the back of the PSU when I did so. When I plugged in the keyboard, I heard a bang which seemed to come from the left rather than from the PC. No matter, I thought, and plugged the rest of the stuff in, flipped the PSU switch to 1, then tried to turn the PC on. Nothing happened. I'd been having problems with another computer turning itself off there, so I thought maybe there was something wrong with the power. I took it back upstairs and tried again, and nothing happened. I checked all the connections, unplugged power sw and plugged it back in, then tried again. Nothing happened.

I feel like throwing the piece of crap away. It cheated!!! It worked then it didn't. It broke the rules.

But I would rather (sigh) fix it. Is there anything I can do, or should I just take it to some repair place?

Thats kinda of odd since I sent mine half way across the country all built with some wires not connected in the case box. I recieved it and it worked fine when I plugged everything in. My sure none of the parts came loose. Take all of them out, and put them back in, and see if thats your problem.

Well. I unplugged the power connectors and plugged them back in, reset the CMOS and switched it on. BANG!!! Blue light and a loud crack. Then everything worked fine!! I set the BIOS to how I wanted and windows booted fine. Then I turned off the PC. One thing's for sure, I'm never taking this thing downstairs again. I'm buying a 150ft network cable and using it sparingly. But I'm afraid to turn it back on again in case I do damage. What could be wrong? Is it my house's wiring? PSU?

THANKS LA22!!! I feel great now.

you could always travel the wireless way and buy yourself a wireless router and network card if you don't want to run the extra cables throughout your home.

Nope, way too much distance. It would be far cheaper to have a cable, since I don't intend to be on all the time, only for updates and demos. Thanks though.

Does that mean it is fixed? I am confused b/c you continue to ask "What could be wrong? Is it my house's wiring? PSU?"

If it is not fixed then, do you know of a place that will let you tryout a different PSU to try to find the source of the problem?

Well, I tried to turn on my star-crossed compy again and everything worked fine. I had a few hours of incredibly smooth gameplay. The next day (just now) I tried again and was treated to a light show and some really loud electrical noises. I would have a funeral, but it's my money that died. Plus I still have hope.

Thanks for all your help, guys, on this thread and others. I don't have another PSU handy, so I'm gonna take it down to a repair place.
