939 basic build??
Please consider the following:
case & power supply: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811129127 motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131530 video card: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814130214 cpu: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819103535 ram: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820145440 floppy: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16821103116 hard drive: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148039 dvd burner: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827152047 XP Home: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827152047 Would this be considered a good basic system using quality parts? Is the Power Supply in that case good enough? How does the video card compare performance wise to an ATI 9800 pro? A good basic system = would do just about anything except high end gaming. Thanks ever so much. |

You will need this case/psu. That one you selected is very good quality, but you need an ATX 2.0 psu.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129155 Otherwise everything else looks good, a well balanced system. That video card performs better than a 9800pro. You will be suprised at that systems gaming capabilities. |

I think your missing a processor..
Something like a AMD 64 3000+ Venice should work pretty well.

It was stated that this is a very balanced system. I'm putting together a system for my brother, who will mostly use it for basic tasks (email, surfing, document editting). He has 2 kids, so the occasional game might be played. He has emphasized to me that he wants a "fast" pc. I imagine he means something that will multitask well, especially when multiple users may be logged in and running programs. I think I could get this system cheaper by downgrading the memory to 512 MB (2x512), smaller hard drive, and a low end video card. I'm concerned about a lower end video card being more of a drain on the resources though (shared memory). Any suggestions? Is this system (downgraded as stated), still too much for his non-gaming needs?
edit: also, would downgrading the RAM to 512MB be a bad move? also forgot to say i doubt he'll be doing an overclocking or anything, so the power requirements might possibly be lower.

Hope that helps. I wouldn't recommend downgrading the RAM or video card below what I have listed above myself....who wants to build a machine and have a kid put in a game CD only to have the system crash. |

Thanks drb46. That looks good, but I was wondering about the AMD Sempron. I'm an intel person myself and i don't know much about AMD, but i'm considering AMD for this system. The Sempron's are not 64bit processors, correct? I may want to get the AMD Athlon 64 so that they can upgrade to the new windows when its released. My brother has not really given me a budget, but if i go with the Athlon 64, then thats basically what was already described above...I guess that settles it :-)

I just built my AMD 64 3000+ Venice core on an Asus A8N-E, but with a EVGA 7800 GT. I'm very happy with both the motherboard, as well as the cool temperatures of the 3000+ (not to mention the video card).
