New CPU temp right??
Hi guys, I've just set up my first major upgrade on my rig and it's all going great except for the cpu temp.
I'm using an Athlon 64-bit 'Venice' 3000+ with an Abit K8N mobo but when I start up my comp the cpu fan runs really high for about 3-5 seconds then goes back to normal (?) speeds. In the bios it says my cpu temp is 45 degrees celcius! Is this right?? Should I be getting temps like this with stock cooling? I'm very concerned since this is my first time putting on a cpu and cooling so I may have done it wrong - but I don't THINK I have... Any suggestions guys?

I think the tempurature is ok. It is only around 112F. Mine runs idle at 40C. I also just use the stock heatsink and fan. If you would like to get a lower tempurature, try a Zalman CPU fan.

Oh so this kinda temp is normal with stock cooling? You have no idea how relieved I am to hear that lol!
I've upgraded from a P4 2.4ghz cpu and that ran idle at around 30-35 degrees celcius hence my panic when I saw the post 40 temps! So at which point should I really be worried? |

You'll know when you have heating problems because your computer will become unstable. You'll get problems like freezing, random shutdowns, reboots, extra slow performance, screwed up monitor images, etc... Cricket

Also, there is really no reason to bother with getting another fan/heatsink unless you want to overclock, then it is recommended.

Changing from the retail heatsink voids the warranty, I think, correct me if I am wrong.

No, I don't think it does. They sell OEM CPUs so obviously they don't mind you using HSFs other than their HSF.
I hope it doesn't void the warranty!!

Using a 3rd party heatsink and fan will only void your warranty if you purchased the retail version of your cpu. O.E.M. is open season.
If you overclock like me you should get a Thermalright XP 90, with a high cfm fan! Mine is 25c idle and 30c at full load with the XP 90. http://img363.imageshack.us/img363/9968/ii5wy.jpg here it is after 3 hours full speed with Prime 95 http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/5277/prime959jb.jpg |
