Media Center PC

Is it possible to build a Media Center PC with Dual TV Tuners and a HDTV output on the graphics card for around $500 not including moniter, mouse, and keyboard. Also in a microATX slim case.

By media center do you mean you will mainly be just recording tv and music or also editing? I don't think you could get one for $500, maybe $700 (but still am not sure as the hdtv cards and good tuners are semi expensive) just becuase you will want lots of harddrive space for recording. Also why two tv tuners? I am not sure if it would work, but if it did why the need?

I would say you need to raise the budget to at least $700 to get what you want. It's difficult enought to build a quality machine for $500, let alone a PVR.

Multiple tuners work fine. Having more than one tuner allows you to watch one show and record another. Most software will allow up to three tuners which would allow you to record two shows and watch another.

I just mean recording.

Ok, if I went up to $700 what kind of processing power would I need just to be able to make it work smoothly?

Also any reccommendations on hardware? So far I like the Hauppauge PVR 500 and like a Saphire x700

The PVR-500 is a very good card. It has an onboard encoder so that would take quite a bit of load off the CPU. That video card would work too. I'd go for a P4, you don't need a ton of power. Get a large hard drive and 512 MB or more of RAM. You may be able to get close to the original $500 budget.

Is there a minimum amount of Ghz I should consider for the CPU.

Just curiously why do your reccommend Intel over AMD in this situation, becasuse its not for gaming?

Intel has always had an edge in video work. It's not a huge edge but it can't hurt. AMD would certainly work as well.

A 2.8ghz P4 would probably be more than adequate. Even a 2.4ghz would probably work fine. The onboard encoder on the tuner card reduces the need for a monster CPU.

No, anything aroung 3ghz should do it. Its more towards ram and HD
