New Comp - cheap cheap!!
I need to build a CHEAP computer for x-mas.
Basically, it needs to do some word processing, download music and surf the net. Maybe have decent onboard video / audio for simple games (No half life, BF2 or anything like that.. Kid stuff) Can anyone recommend a motherboard, etc.. Thanks! |

Sounds to me like an entry level Dell would fill the bill and be cheaper than a build your own. Just don't expect an advanced slot for a video card upgrade, you have to go above entry level for AGP or PCI-E and then you are getting into viable build your own territory.

if you are in the 400-450 range i have used the
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103535 cpu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130514 mb they work pretty well and are relatively cheap and if you combine them with some ram 512 or so maybe http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146219 and a hard drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822135106 and just a cdrw and a video card and case you can come close to 400-450 keep in mind you still dont have monitor keyboard and mouse this is where dell is useful when building a budget pc its hard to beat them because most of the time they throw in the monitor keyboard and mouse you could probably buy a comparable computer for 450 but they would throw in the keyboard mouse and maybe a 15 or 17 inch flat panel for free |

Thanks folks! I'll check out the info you guys provided. and yes, my budget was around $450.00 to $550.00.
Although it may be inexpensive, I still might not be able to afford doing this for x-mas. My desire is bigger than my check book. LOL! |

I do agree with glc on this, you may be better off getting an entry-level Dell, however, keep in mind your upgrade options will be limited.

Another reason to get a prebuilt system with that budget is that you will get Windows with it, saving about 80 to 100 bucks, and also they usually throw in other usefull software.

And it's going to be very hard to put something together on your own for $500

As recomended you should go with a prebuilt, but if you really want to build something on your own, i would suggest going with a cheap sempron 64($50-80) or celeron D($70-80), a cheap mobo with onboard sound and lan ($50-60), an MX4000($20-35), cheap 80gb hdd($50-60), cheap forton and source 300 watt psu (around $20), a cheap case (around $30-40), and finally a copy of windows xp home (around $100), oh and 512 mb ram ($50),cd writer ($20-30) if you have a monitor that would be great if not they are around $100 (CRT), keyboard and mouse (combos at cheaps stores for like $20), there you got ur self a nice surfin rig for your budget.
