Upgrade Suggestions
Hello All
A year ago I was giving upgrade/new suggestions on this forum, but job obligations have kept me from keeping up. I'm upgrading from an XP 2400+, 1GB of PC32000, 9600XT AIW, ANTEC Sontata 380W Case, SG 120GBHD. This is what I want to upgrade to: MSI K8N Neo4-F Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD eVGA 256-P2-N386 Geforce 6800GS 256MB GDDR3 AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Western Digital Raptor WD740GD I guess what I'm wondering is if I need to pick up a FD (I've been floppiless for almost 2 years now) to load the SATA drivers when I install XP Pro. Will the 380W PS be sufficient with my setup? Adding a 6800 card and a Raptor will obviously be a larger drain from my current system (my SG HD will be delegated as a storage drive) I'd appreciate any upgrade suggestions or comments on my questions about initial setup. Happy Thanksgivings to Alll. |

I'd bump the PSU up to at least 450W since your not heading down the SLi path. If you change your mind then you will have to go with an SLi certified PSU.
As far as the FDD goes, it's personal preference. If you enjoyed computing without it for awhile and saw no need, then don't worry about it. On the other hand, they are only $10 and you never know when they may come in handy. Especially if a optical drive fails. The newer boards should have the SATA support already. I know when I set my system up I just plugged in the SATA cables and power cables and turned the system on. They showed up with in the BIOS with no problems. eVGA has had some issues with the card fans going out. Last edited by gtucker329; 11-24-2005 at 06:57 AM. |

Most of the newer motherboards come with 2 SATA controllers, and you will often need the floppy to load the drivers for the secondary channel on them.

That build looks pretty good...but...
I think I'd get the Asus board over the MSI one you have listed...I have seen mixed reviews about some NF4 product there putting out...They may have it fixed by now though... I would also recomend as others have ...bumping up the PSU...the 6800 series seems to be power hungry... The Xclio seems to be the Psu of choice lately...enjoy the new pc
