Unstable System
I have a new build
AMD 3800+ X2 OCZ 2X1Gb platinum ASUS 6600GT 128MB Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 Abit KN8 Ultra Antec TP II 480Watt Windows XP Pro the problem is that windows will randomly crash when programs are run. I don't think it matters what program and it doesn't always happen. It mostly occurs when I try to run 3DMark05. I have made it through the benchmark about half of the time but the rest of the time in the middle of the program a blue screen with white text will flash for 1/10 of a second, too fast to read anything and then the computer will restart. There has not been a problem running prime95 and when that was running there were no problems. I have no idea what is going on. I have tried flashing the bios to all other versions available on the abit website. I think that windows is up to date although I think I could update to x64 version. Does anyone know this problem Thanks |

Could be a RAM memory problem.. What type and configuration do you have for your memory?? Could even be the memory timing settings in the BIOS..

Check that the heatsink on the CPU is securely attached. If it is loose it could cause the type of problems you described.
11 passes- no errors--memory is fine.

The cpu hasn't been above 42 and i was really trying to get it up there. It idles at 28-30. I've been thinking that it might be the HD but i don't know how to test.

You could try running RAM and Harddrive diagnostics. I've never ran them so I dont know how to, but alot of members here can guide you.
It's very possible that the Hard drive is failing...I haven't heard to many good things about Deskstars (A.K.A. "Deathstar") Also, perhaps a PSU issues? |

Disable the reboot function so you can view details of the BSOD

Is it a USB Keyboard? If so a USB to PS2 converter should work.

The Drive Fitness Test came back
Quick Test Disposition Code 0x00 Advanced Test Disposition Code 0x00 Exerciser (3cycles) Disposition Code 0x00 The exerciser said it would finish in 1.5 hours turned out to take 2.5 How do I test the power supply to see if it is delivering correct wattage and voltage. I used http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_sup...or.php?cmd=AMD and it said my recommended wattage was 311 although I can not select x2 processor or pci express graphics card. What should I add to compensate for these. Also in newegg the efficiency was rated at >70%, does this mean that instead of providing 480max its producing 336max. What about the other components video card and mother board, could these be causing my random restarts. |

sorry for the bump I just wanted to update in case it could be of use to someone else.
I took the heatsink off and saw that the medium was only spread on half of the cpu. I turned the heatsink around and no problems since. Thanks for all the responses. |
