Help! My new build doesn't work!
I just built a new computer using old parts form a previous system. The hard drive only has the operating system on it.
When I boot up my computer goes to a screen asking me how to start Windows: Normal, Safe Mode, Previous Settings... No matter what I chose, the screen displays an error message saying that it detected a problem and has shutdown Windows. Specs: Celeron D 2.53GHz 1 GB Geil DDR SDRAM RAM 300 Watt power supply 40 GB WD Hard Drive CD/DVD combo drive samsung 3.3" floppy drive Should I get a new hard drive? P.S. I can't reformat the hard drive, although I am willing to erase it completely. |

depending on what you re-used, you may have to re-install your operating system, if you make too many changes, you may end up with an OS nightmare...
you computer might be confused if you just took the hard-drive and put it on a new mobo with new hardware, it might be as simple as doing a repair installation on the HDD. Be careful though because if you reinstall you may lose files on the HDD... what all did you re-use???? -roaming_builder Last edited by roaming_builder; 12-01-2005 at 05:24 PM. |

I reused the hard drive and the CD Drive, but I think the hard drive's the problem.

What OS is this?
I'm thinking roaming_builder's got a point: there's probably a driver conflict somewhere along the line with the new hardware.

its not very easy to reuse a hard drive with a new build
most of the time you have to reinstall the operating system or it wont work too much new information for it to comprehend it all you will most likely have to reinstall the operating system no reason to buy a new hard drive the old one probably isnt bad |

You said the only thing on the old HDD is an OS? Then you shouldn't feel any remorse reformatting it =P Reformat it and install a new OS, if that doesn't work, then yeah. I'm pretty much just restating what everyone else said... but ... ...
uhm.. Good luck! |

For XP, just reboot with the OS CD and run the repair console to do a repair install. It will look in the BIOS and install the appropriate generic drivers for all the new hardware.

You should go into BIOS and change the boot order so the optical drive is first. Have you done that?

Slow System
Windows installed but the system is running really really slow. The system bus speed is 133MHz. How can I change this?

That's correct, it's 133MHz quad pumped, for a FSB of 533MHz - That's what a Celeron runs at. You can't change it unless you upgrade the CPU to one with a FSB of 800MHz and a board that supports it.
But it shouldn't be *that* slow. Have you installed the video drivers yet? |

What motherboard are you using? Did you install the chipset drivers from the motherboard CD? Is your hard drive a 7200 RPM model or a 5400 RPM? Cricket

I haven't installed any of the drivers yet because of the slow speed. Thanks, I'll try installing the drivers that came with the motherboard.

You should install the video drivers. If they aren't installed, and say go to surf a web page, and you scroll down fast, you see the screen being updated once or twice a second (instead of 60 or more times a second). Are you seeing that?

I inserted the Driver CD and nothing happens. The light on the CD drive flashes, but it doesn't auto play the disk. When I go to Run and try to run the Setup.exe file, the little hourglass comes up and the disappears. The application never starts. I've check under task manager, and it's not listed on there.
